533488 2007-03-16 04:29:00 Hi all

On our laptop PcCillin Internet security has just expired and as the laptop isn't used a heck of a lot, i decided to replace it with Avast which takes care of the antivirus part,

Now the laptop is a shade underpowered in the memory department so i don't want a firewall that sucks the memory, last time i used a free firewall (2002ish) the machine i was using struggled a lot with it and that machine wasn't a slug back then

Any suggestions?

The machine is used mainly to remotly admin a desktop machine, but there is the ocasional bit of web surfing

533491 2007-03-16 04:36:00 Well if u mean XP's firewall, then no it isnt good enough.

I've tried all sorts of firewalls, Nortons and ZA, memory hog and both stop u from surfing, often.

Pc-cillin it kept cutting us off for some reason, usually after or just before a minute. So that went in the bin.

I've tried a few of the rule based firewalls. Some of them are too hard to figure out. Just to get a network to work.

And the only one I use now is Comodo. The first few versions had bugs, but havent had a prob with the latest version yet.

I beg to differ, though qualify that to the extent it seems to be a fairly low risk machine. Still, it takes only once.

I have yet seen a MS security product that bests 3rd part software, including the vast majority of free stuff. Of course the MS offerings will be adequate, if yuo never connect to a network.

Comodo firewall is fairly lightweight.

Next time, I swear it.

533494 2007-03-16 04:47:00 Get a real firewall, unlike some people I find Zone Alarm excellent.
But whatever, so long as it isn't just the Windows one.

And add more RAM to the laptop.

533495 2007-03-16 11:59:00 I was running Zone alarm, with XP and only 256 ram, and didn't have a problem, and I wouldn't just have the Windows firewall. supergran (108)
533496 2007-03-16 18:24:00 As a couple others have said, Comodo  I run that, it is great and never had a problem with it, don't even know it is running (but it is) The_End_Of_Reality (334)
533497 2007-03-16 18:43:00 Comodo is good. I have it on my wife's laptop.

Zone Alarm a memory hog? I have ZA Security Suite here on my desktop and Task Manager > Processes show it using only 15 Kb.
