534646 2007-03-20 22:42:00 I’ve just purchased a new HDD and would like to test it fully prior to installing any software.

I’ve downloaded the appropriate software and it has made itself a bootable Floppy using PC DOS 2000 or similar.

Anyway, that’s fine, but the computer I want to use this utility on doesn’t have a FDD.

However, we do have a CD ROM and what I want to know is how I make the CD ROM boot this utility at start-up? Like most of these HDD test utilities they like to run before anything else is loaded.

I’m using XP and CD Burner XP Pro3 to do the burning.

534647 2007-03-20 23:04:00 Get a usb flash drive if the system supports booting from one. Speedy Gonzales (78)
534648 2007-03-20 23:13:00 What brand drive? You can get a CD version of Seagate Seatools as an iso download that you burn. PaulD (232)
534649 2007-03-20 23:19:00 I’ll check if the Bios will boot from a USB device Speedy.

The HDD is a Hitachi Paul.

534651 2007-03-20 23:56:00 Thanks for that Paul .

I’ve downloaded that file but what do I do with it?

Do I just burn the file to a CD?

Do I ask the burner to make the disk bootable or does the download do that as part of the burn?

Dumb Aye .

I’ve checked the BIOS Speedy and it seems you can boot from CD ROM – HDD – Removable Device – LAN .

No mention of USB but would that come under Removable Device?

The machine is a Compaq Presario 2500 if that’s of any help .

534653 2007-03-22 13:34:00 Thanks Paul, worked a treat .

However, I'm still curious as to how to achieve the same thing from a Flashdrive?

That sounds right, it should work then.

You just format it. You'll have to use something from boot.com and a tool from HP, if u use XP. Since XP wont give u the option to make a system disk.

Or do it (format) it on 2000, or a OS that'll let u format and make a system disk.

Then u copy whatever files youre talking about re: this FDD utility. Thats it, its bootable. And it'll work as if it were a floppy or any other bootable drive.

534655 2007-03-22 22:07:00 Have a look here (h18000.www1.hp.com) for the HP utility that Speedy mentioned for making a UDB drive bootable.

Also, this (www.howudune.com) link is how to put Knoppix onto a USB key. I spent quite a while playing with this, it works really well, and it can be very useful having an entire operating system on a thumb drive.
