534060 2007-03-18 11:28:00 Evening all. Remember how my modem would drop its dial-up connection every 30 secs, generally in wet weather? Reading back through earlier threads I noticed a similar problem to mine with a common denominator: ZoneAlarm. Being a timid soul I first just turned the thing off. And the problem vanished. So I did the conventional uninstall, deleted any found references still on C:\ and then ran CCleaner. And to date, no drop out. Bless you, Mr(?) Gonzales. Now if any of you know of a firewall that works like Comodo but for 98SE... bjf (11296)

It would have been better if you had posted this feedback in your previous thread so that others searching the forum with a similar problem will know what the solution was.

With regards to a recommended firewall, I second drcspy's suggestion - Kerio. Try and find an older version of it.

534064 2007-03-19 05:51:00 Does ZoneAlarm cause dropouts with an broadband router too? I've been having problems with it lately, but because I'm still with Xtra I could easily blame them over ZA. --Wolf-- (128)
534065 2007-03-19 05:58:00 it can do......just go into msconfig/startup and disable it then reboot to see if things improve.....make sure you ENable the windoze firewall at least in the meantime tho...... drcspy (146)

534067 2007-03-19 06:42:00 yeh and it could also be ZA ive had it do similar..........so its very easy to eliminate it by doin what I siad.........temporarily disable it and if your problem dropouts stop then you have your answer drcspy (146)
534068 2007-03-19 06:50:00 I haven't read Speedy's response to your initial problem but are you by any chance in a rural, semi/rural area? If so you could well have a similar problem to myself i.e. electric fences!! In wet or even windy weather the dial up connection used to cut out quite often. Our electric fence goes right past the bundled loop post (don't know the correct name for it) and has a rusty old drum covering it which will be replaced by a plastic drum & barbed wire surround. It only happens infrequiently now. From what I hear most rural folk have similar problems and turning off the electric fence seems to (in some cases) fix it. However any neighbouring fences which are shorting out somewhere can cause your fix to be a waste of time. I do seem to recall that when I had ZoneAlarm installed there apeared to be more problems with the connection cutting out. One way to tell if you or your neighbour has a short in the electric fence is that you hear the pulse ticking when you turn on the radio. Just thought it might be worth mentioning. Gordon62 (11771)
