534429 2007-03-20 02:53:00 I have been using a 60Gb external usb powered drive which appeared as Drive E alongside the C drive in My Computer.
After uninstalling the Maxtor software because I use a different backup program, the computer can no longer access the drive. When I connect it, It appears as a usb drive that is working properly but does not appear under disk drives in device manager where it used to be.
What can I do?

534430 2007-03-20 02:57:00 Try reinstalling the Maxtor software radium (8645)
534431 2007-03-20 06:22:00 The software is on the drive itself and I cannot locate any driver software on the Maxtor website. It states only that WinXp will recognise the drive. bpt2 (6653)
534432 2007-03-20 07:00:00 run compmgmt.msc and see if the drive appears in Disk Management, if it doesn't then take a look in device manager and see if there are any errors.

Event viewer is also a good place to have a look to find out what might be going on.

534433 2007-03-20 07:30:00 yep, what radium said, although im amazed windoze doesnt recognise it, we use several usb drives for tasks (not maxtor admittedly) and have never had an issue. devo (6058)
534434 2007-03-20 07:39:00 We need more information to help further .

I've seen various USB drives that can't be seen by windows, sometimes it is caused by removing them incorrectly .

Does it appear in the disk management program? Are there errors in the event log associated with it?

Does it work in a different USB port?

534435 2007-03-20 08:23:00 It does not appear under Disk Management or as a drive in device manager. I believe I inadvertantly uninstalled the Maxtor software when I decided to use another backup program.
The device appears in Device Manager as "Maxtor Personal Storage Security"
In the Event Viewer I get an error message:
DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. " attempting to start the service PDAgent with arguments "-Service" in order to run the server:
{BD305370-D59A-4293-8AE3-E58926276892}
The previous message reads:
The Removable Storage service entered the stopped state.
Not sure what all that means though.

534436 2007-03-20 10:16:00 Ok - delete the Maxtor entry in device manager then reboot the computer - with the Maxtor device attached. gcarmich (10068)
534437 2007-03-20 10:25:00 DCOM got error " The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it . " attempting to start the service PDAgent with arguments " -Service " in order to run the server:

This is Perfectdisk I think . It shouldnt have anything to do with the usb drive .

Mine says the same thing . (Mines on manual and stopped) .

You go to control panel / admin tools . Removable storage service is here .

But the usb flash drive here still works .

534438 2007-03-20 10:40:00 Problem solved after I finally found the software at:
support.seagate.com
Don't know why it was so hard to track down, but anyway installing it solved the problem and I can now access the drive!
