Microsoft has said that its OneCare security suite has "a problem" with the underlying antivirus code, and admitted that security is just "a little part of Microsoft".

Microsoft has a problem. Period.

535015 2007-03-22 07:58:00 Microsoft is a great company to partner with, especially if your Novell Linux

"However, it was Novell's tacit recognition of the existence of intellectual property in Linux - by accepting Microsoft's promise not to prosecute developers whose open source code is used by Novell - that really rankled the community.
And you can see why. It put Microsoft's chief executive Steve Ballmer back on form in the weeks following the deal, claiming Linux infringes Microsoft IP and that Microsoft wanted to "get the appropriate economic return for our shareholders from our innovation." Novell agreed to pay Microsoft $40m in protection."

So don't trust their OneCare.

Its a worry if microsoft can't write software properly for their own operating system . The have their fingers in too many pies at the moment, but how many of them will be a huge success .

535017 2007-03-22 08:35:00 you'd think they'd check it doesn't interfere with their own software before public release wouldn't they?

i think MS getting into the anti-virus market is bad, bad news. historically MS has entered a market, destroyed the competition, and then sat on their hands without improving anything. that's how firefox came about, to which microsofts reply was to copy it's features and then send IE7 out as a windows update. if it wasn't for apple they wouldn't bother with new feature for their OSs, oh wait they stole all those new vista features from mac too

if this happens to antivirus programs it won't be long till virus writers learn to cripple the MS product. vista has already made it difficult for anti-virus producers, i wouldn't be surprised if onecare is only the beginning of a new MS anti-virus suite

None of them.
They only have two success stories in their entire history - Windows and Office. Fortunately they are both VERY successful and account for about 80% of Microsoft's profit. Pretty much everything else they do has lost money or continues to loose money for them. Microsoft also gets a lot of licensing revenue from Windows server software (about 20%)

535020 2007-03-22 11:30:00 It's kind of funny they're making money off the initial product's shoddy security. sal (67)
