534919 2007-03-21 12:08:00 my sli won't work:(

i have two identical asus geforce 6600gt plugged into my asus m2n sli deluxe motherboard (with 4*512MB RAM, AMD athlon64 3800, pci wifi card, dvd drive, floppy and sata hdd)

i've de-overclocked everything to factory, put the sli bridge on, and read the manual.

apparently to do sli i have to set both my PCI-E 16x slots to 8x, but i cannot find anywhere in the bios nor motherboard manual to do so, it just tells me it has to be that way. when i do as per the manual and go to the nvidia settings i get this. according to device manager and everest (which is too old to recognise my motherboard) i only have one 6600gt.

both cards worked fine mere minutes before installing them, and i have been happily running one for years now (about 2 months on this motherboard)

EDIT: and the psu is strong enough

534921 2007-03-21 14:48:00 Pfffft @ sli. According to everything I've read it's a waste of cash compared to getting a single top-end card for the same money. Bad choices mate is all I can say. Suffer and weep. Greg (193)
534922 2007-03-21 15:18:00 how kind. if you haven't noticed yet this is a help forum. "suffer and weep" is not what i'd call helpful. it's offensive, unhelpful and unnecessary, and based on a false assumption no less.

seeing as my brother was upgrading to a 7600gt i got his old 6600gt on the cheap. if this would work it would be more economical, and save me trying to flog it off on trademe. see my sig below - unlike some people i do have more sense than money. i wouldn't even buy a top end card anyway, if i was to buy a faster card it would be a 7600gt seeing as they will run nearly anything at max setting.

this should work out at better than a single 7600gt for less money. i wouldn't pay for (can't afford) a 7900 or 8800

534923 2007-03-21 19:03:00 To digress slightly.
I recently installed a 7950 gtx card.
The vendor suggested I buy two of them for "Outstanding , Mind Blowing graphics"
I asked for a demo.
He came and installed the second card. It worked without problems.

But the O,MB graphics where no better than what I already had. Even the vendor couldn't see any improvement. And he tried and tried.

Exit the vendor with card two.

He demoed the card with some graphics program he had, designed to help sell the cards.

So two good cards are no better than one good card. :o

534924 2007-03-21 20:48:00 There should be jumpers on the mobo somewhere, on my DFI Lanparty SLI-DR they are rather big and are positioned below the first PCI-E 16x slot. Oh and the slots *should* change to 8x automatically once you change the jumpers (if there are any (some mobos don't have them, there is an SLI setting ing the BIOS))

What you will find is that SLI helps A_LOT at the really high settings, I am talking settings over 1600x1200 MAX EVERYTHING (Textures, Details, Render distance, AA, AF) and in really intensive games such as FEAR and Oblivion, it is really noticable that there are 2 cards at such high settings.

Although yes, a single high end card is often better, there are times when it is not the better option, as in this case. OR someone who has an unlimited budget and gets 2 high end cards, say 8800GTXs...

534925 2007-03-21 20:55:00 Don't the graphics cards have to be SLI capable ? Is the 6600GT capable of doing this ?

534926 2007-03-21 22:00:00 I have answered my question in previous post and it is yes. Read this tech report on useing the 6600GT in SLI mode.

534928 2007-03-21 23:11:00 Thats 24 hours... You could have said it much nicer, and while I hate banning... it really wasnt necessary to respond in such a manner.

Good luck with getting it sorted.. SLI looks like a good 'upgrade' option in your case, lets hope it works out.

Chill.
