1405543 2015-07-29 01:00:00 Why was Tony Robertson (www.nzherald.co.nz) allowed to get away with name suppression for so long?

Who was he trying to protect?

Why should criminals receive a better treatment than their victims?

Would someone please elaborate?

1405544 2015-07-29 01:08:00 So he was tried on his current crime and not previous ones he had committed. Alex B (15479)

Tony Robertson was released from prison in December 2013 after serving a sentence for abducting and indecently assaulting a child. Five months later he killed Ms Gotingco.

1405547 2015-07-29 01:51:00 Because in NZ that's how it is.
If he was in America he would have got 25 years in the first place.....here they get a smack on the wrist, get days out from prison etc...

1405552 2015-07-29 04:07:00 Robertson was convicted whilst he had name suppression. Once he was convicted and sentenced the judge (from memory) said that the name suppression would be lifted as it no longer served any purpose. Robertson objected on the grounds that he was going to appeal his conviction, and that he could not get a fair retrial if his name was published.

The judge's decision to lift the name suppression was appealed by Robertson, and the appeal was turned down so his name has been published. Good thing too.

Quite simple really, do try to keep up. No conspiracy theories needed.
