1405255 2015-07-24 03:17:00 Deliberately starting a thread so that the existing "geek" thread is not overloaded with simple stuff.

I've signed up for the upgrade and my query is, Can I control the download or will download automatically and if it does can I just "store" the download inactive on my hard drive for installation at a later date.

Or is is it best to cancel the reservation for W10 and resurrect at a later date when things settle down

Good on you for starting this thread-- There will be tonnes of questions ;)

What is meant to happen is you get notified to say its available to download, you can then decide when to download at your convenience .

Generally once downloaded it will install ( AFAIK), BUT not to sure if you can delay installing after download. Allow a minimum of an hour from the time its downloaded to booting. How fast it downloads will depend on if its been reserved first, your internet speed and general Internet traffic.

You don't have to download right away, you have 1 year, till 29th July 2016 to do something about it. (you may get nagged about it)

Some questions can be answered on the FAQ page. windows-10-faq (www.microsoft.com)

1405257 2015-07-24 05:26:00 If it works like windows 8 did when you run the installer it will give you the option to create installation media or install directly. That's where my windows 8 install disks came from :) If you create a disk you can then keep it and use it again. dugimodo (138)
1405258 2015-07-24 07:50:00 I am creating system images on both desktops this weekend even though I'm not planning on implementing Win10 for a month anyway. gary67 (56)

FYI The Windows 10 setup will keep your old Win7/Win8 install around for 30 days

You can roll back at anytime

Also if the setup fails it will automatically roll back

I've done this hundreds of times now and never seen it fail to install or recover

1405260 2015-07-24 23:13:00 “You’ll get a notification on your PC or tablet when Windows 10 is ready to install.”

“Then, when your upgrade is ready after July 29th, 2015, you get a notification that lets you get started with your upgrade.”

You see a notification, and then from that notification you can choose to upgrade right then or schedule the upgrade for a time convenient for you.

1405261 2015-07-24 23:40:00 Can we not save it as an .iso? Then write it to a disc?

1405262 2015-07-24 23:43:00 I've done this hundreds of times now and never seen it fail to install or recover Don't mean any disrespect, but bet it wont go like that for everyone. You know what you are doing, and sure you wont have computers like some users, damaged system files, malware, incompatible software and god knows what else wrong with their systems. wainuitech (129)

KenYou will be able to make a ISO.

As per the link in my first post and the FAQ:

Can I reinstall Windows 10 on My Computer after upgrading

Yes. Once you’ve upgraded to Windows 10 using the free upgrade offer, you will be able to reinstall, including a clean install, on the same device. You won’t need to purchase Windows 10 or go back to your prior version of Windows and upgrade again.

You’ll also be able to create your own installation media like a USB drive or DVD, and use that to upgrade your device or reinstall after you’ve upgraded.
