1405244 2015-07-24 03:02:00 In the tv guide section of The Listener they have the abbreviation AD next to some of the programmes - Coronation St and Shortland St to name but two. At the bottom of the page it says that AD is the abbreviation for Audio Description but what is Audio Description? What does it mean?

Your help is appreciated.

1405246 2015-07-24 04:08:00 I have used it and whatever is happening, a person says whats happening (kind of like a voiceover). Like if someone is going into a shop thats what the person says

If the audio option on the tv has the option select it.

1405247 2015-07-24 04:18:00 AD is Audio Description, so yes, a narrator-style verbal description of what's happening where suitable. inphinity (7274)
1405248 2015-07-24 05:29:00 Ohhh, I thought it meant the programme was made after the birth of Jesus.

There aren’t many of them. :D

I do volunteer work with the Blind Foundation, and the VIPs (Visually Impaired Persons) and total "blindies" love AD. As Speedy and Inphinity say, the AD tells you if the character enters a shop - helpful if you can't see the character actually doing that. Sort of makes a "talking book" out of a TV program. :)

1405253 2015-07-25 03:21:00 Thanks everyone. I tried it out this afternoon and I thought it most interesting. I can see (or should I say hear) how it can be useful for the blind. I found it a bit muffled and so needed to turn up the volume but it was good to hear. I have learnt something new. Thanks chaps. Very helpful and fascinating. Roscoe (6288)
