1413159 2015-12-26 21:14:00 This problem seems to be going nowhere fast ;)

Just re-reading the original post:
I've had the laptop 3ish years and I'm pretty sure it's always been like this (well, for aaaages anyway, I've just put up with it).

Your Hard Drive could also be playing up.

Download Crystal Disk Info-- CrystalDiskInfo5_6_2.zip/ (sourceforge.jp) That's a direct link. Download the zipped file, extract the contents, run the exe. It will take a few seconds to run, once run you will get a window open, if it shows the result as Caution or BAD then the hard drive is starting to fail. Caution usually will show bad sectors ( in the uncorrectable sector count) a healthy drive will be all blue results.

The main causes for high disc usage is SuperFetch, some sort of program running or failing HDD.

BUT disabling superfetch can sometimes also cause more problems.

1413160 2015-12-27 03:39:00 Did you try uninstalling chrome as suggested.

How full is you hard drive.

150gb free of 673gb. Will try uninstalling chrome now.

Has 4gb ram, but in task manager the memory is usually around 30% so I think that's ok.

Yeah, I saw that mentioned in the reddit thread I think. I tried disabling it, that didn't help so I re-enabled it since I saw having it disabled can cause some issues.
Just ran Crystal Disk Info, results were good: i.imgur.com

1413161 2015-12-27 04:05:00 Uninstalling chrome did not help. :(
Dug out the Vaio box from my cupboard, found the receipt, and the laptop is still under warranty!

Any other suggestions? Otherwise will restore to factory settings. That is the last resort though, before sending it in to get it fixed.

Warranties WONT cover software related problems.

If you restored the computer back to factory defaults, and it still played up then yes the warranty would be OK, BUT assuming its just Windows corruptions then it wont.

99% of all the problems I've dealt with on W10 have been due to the upgrade failing/causing all sorts of problems. This Computer I'm on now, did exactly the same thing, Dsik usage running at 100%, nothing apart from wiping the drive clean and installing W10 from fresh would fix it.

Oh maaan. Okay. I highly doubt it's Win 10 though, cause it was the exact same issue before the update.

1413164 2015-12-27 08:04:00 Oh wait just processed what you said. Yeah I realise the warranty wouldn't cover software problems, I wouldn't expect that. I guess the next step would be to figure out whether it is a software (which I highly doubt) or hardware problem. liveitoffthewall (17432)

You can test hardware to a certain degree ( excluding the HDD) by downloading a version of Linux and running it from a Live CD/DVD. This bypasses the Windows install and running from your Hard Drive.

The biggest problem is there are so many versions its not always easy to reccommend one.

BUT you may like to try puppy Linux, Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS, Knoppix, Linux mint the list goes on. This link , on the right hand side has links to some of them www.pendrivelinux.com

1413167 2015-12-28 02:48:00 I don't think I'll do that, it's just a bit too technical for me.
Any other suggestions before I do system reset? (that's if I don't throw it out the window first due to frustration!!)
