1413249 2015-12-23 03:35:00 Me again, PJ. I have another drive, WD 1TB which I have used to do my own backups. It is plugged into this Asus W10. It does not register at all, I can see the blue light on it going on & off. What am I not doing? Thanks. PJ Poppa John (284)

are you facing north when you do this, try lifting one leg off the ground :)
sorry, holidays about to begin , couldnt resist

Try it on another PC/laptop
Is it a portable or powered USB HD?. If the USB cable is too long, sometimes the small/portable ones wont power up properly.Use the very short cable only.
Try another USB port .
Have a listen to it, any strange clicking sound or sounds like its spinning up & spinning down ?

Could be that the USB HD is failing.

Portable drive off computer USB. Lead about 500mm. I can feel it spinning. Blue light is on 2secs off 2 secs. Not flickering as if something is happening. Will try another laptop later. PJ

1413252 2015-12-23 04:42:00 Has it ever worked on this laptop previously ?

If so, or has not been attached, also make sure its in the correcct USB port. If the USB plug on the drive has a blue insert, its USB3. While USB3 is meant to be backwards compatible with USB2 sometimes it doesn't always go as it "should".

Also double click Computer and see if its actually showing, its possible for some reason its not opening the auto or not being given a drive letter - if this is the case you have assign one.

1413253 2015-12-23 06:00:00 Some USB powered drives don't get enough power from some PC's USB ports. That's why some have a cable that lets you plug into two ports for more power. It's possible this is the problem.
Also USB 3.0 can supply more power than USB 2.0 so even if it is backwards compatible it may just not get enough power still.

1413254 2015-12-23 07:08:00 Just read the stickon labels on both portable drives. Neither has been connected to this Asus W10. It should show as drive F. But nowt there. What now? PJ Poppa John (284)
1413255 2015-12-23 07:44:00 Checked with WD for WD 1042 drivers, says that mine are up to date. I will try it on Toshiba W7 tomorrow. PJ Poppa John (284)

Do you know how to check in Disk Management and see if there is a drive Letter associated with the drive. if windows for some reason hasn't given it a letter then it wont show.

I can do a instruction video, dead easy to follow, but not tonight - not quite in the right "state" ;)

W...Just to recap. Asus laptop, W10, 500gb HD partitioned C & D. If I plug in a USB drive I get "F", as I would expect. Both the WD1042 & NexStar show on W7 as "E". Neither shows on here, both show on Device Manager as an icon but no other info. PJ

Just double check to make sure its showing in Disk management.

If you are not to sure how :

Click Start, in the search type in Computer Management - Select it and open, then click on Disk Management.

Scroll down the list - if the USB drive is there, make sure its got a Drive letter ( sometimes windows wont give it one, and if it hasn't then it wont show)
If its showing as being there but hasn't got a letter, right click the drive, " Change Drive Letter and Paths", Assign it a letter ( doesn't matter what) and it will appear as normal. You'll get a warning just click Yes to carry on.

I've a done a VERY quick and rough Video to show how ( link below) - The USB drive attached had a letter already of G , but I simply changed it to H.

Its done on a W10, but apart from that its exactly the same. The search is bottom Left hand corner.

Changing or assigning a Drive Letter (screencast.com).

IF its not showing at all in Disk management then theres a connection problem on the laptop.
