1405870 2015-08-06 22:59:00 Where are the massive Hacker News threads and Reddit rants about this? 

There have been plenty of online rants, but these things are quickly forgotten.

Older version of Android have a security hole, that wont be patched. Only the newer versions are patched for it.
The issue is many devices are still sold with older versions of Android, and millions of devices still have the older versions and cant(easily) be updated to newer Android as
they were abandoned by manufacturers soon after being sold.

and to summarise that artcle, and Im quoting :-)
put on your tinfoil hats and look the other way :clap

"Windows 10 is a free upgrade only for consumers"

blah blah rant blah conspiracy

"And that’s just fine! Windows 10 is a wonderful operating system, and a worthwhile upgrade from Windows 7 and 8. Plus, Microsoft provides you the option to disable or outright not use any of its services—though they are pretty damned polished and helpful. You don’t have to pay Microsoft any more money or let it peer over your shoulder just because you use Windows 10 "

I define free as it doesnt cost me any money. By that definition the UPGRADE is free
Of course you have to pay if not eligble for the upgrade
stupid article

1405873 2015-08-07 07:11:00 We get all concerned about security on our computers, then quite happily send everything off to someones Cloud! Do we find out where said cloud is and who it belongs to first - NO. There are many clouds, Google, Microsoft, Drop Box etc
I now use Linux as much as I can when online.

If that article qualifies as a 'conspiracy rant' then maybe you need to get out more... :)

Sure, there is plenty of hyperbole about, but the 'religious nutter' approach is not very interesting or useful - I'm more interested in the opinions of slightly more balanced people.
Obviously, for those who already have everything on "somebody elses server" and don't care about being tracked and profiled and marketed at, it probably won't be much of an issue - i was really more interested to see how many here that thought that the further encroachment of the internet-style "surveilence society" onto their 'private' desktops might be something worth thinking about, and at least weighing up the pro's and con's before installing the new shiny 'free' thing.

1405875 2015-08-08 10:47:00 Another cost to this new os that hasn't been mentioned here is that it uses your computer and internet connection to help upload updates onto others computers. I guess this is similar to p2p. So they presumably are doing this to save money on their own bandwidth requirements if they were to run out updates in a centralized fashion? Johnnz (7246)

This is one feature if managed correctly will actually save some bandwidth ( as long as it works).

You can disable it fully, OR disable it to the point of only using your LAN. You'll still get the updates from Microsoft, but instead of downloading the same update multi times it gets done once. ( again as long as it works) and shared to other LAN connected Computers.

See this page windows.microsoft.com expand out "How do I turn Delivery Optimization Off"

Think I'll test it and see if it does actually work :)

1405877 2015-08-08 11:50:00 On that subject of the sharing updates on the Internet.
One of the guys at work did a test the other day.
After upgrading to windows 10 he made sure all other devices on his network were turned off, to make sure they weren't using any data, and left his computer on for a couple of days.
His internet usage was about 70gb in those two days!

He didn't do any other downloading other than a bit of web browsing so something in win10 used a crap load of Internet bandwidth.

Good points fred_fish. I think MS have overstepped the mark this time.

Windows 10 is the end of cloud-free computing
You have to trust someone. The only question is who.
