1405342 2015-07-26 01:25:00 And when you are at the top....where is there to go? The first thing I will do when I install my copy of Windows 10....is to make it LOOK like Windows 7. To me Windows 10 is bloody UGLY!.Microsoft have been asked by large numbers of users to be allowed the choice of 'Themes' as many people REALLY like the Aero look. How have Microsoft responded? ... with disdain. If you want large scale uptake....maybe Microsoft would do better to LISTEN to the customer!

Maybe you should stay on Windows 7 if Windows 10 isn't for you

It's still supported until 2020

Windows 10 is a crowd-sourced OS, customers are telling Microsoft what to put in the OS. Put that feedback into the Windows Feedback tool so it can be voted on by the Windows community.

So they should stay on 7 and lose support so much sooner?
Top answer. :groan:

If that is the best you can do, you will lose them much quicker.
Many of us have run the gauntlet of several miserable abject failures on M$ part
Vista and 8 to name two, this 10 is sounding like another from the same mould.

Luckily as an experienced tech, I can simply move to something else.
However the average user finds this daunting and so are captive to your company.

You should consider them carefully before instituting certain changes.
I am sure there will be good points in this 'new' Windows version
but forcing updates that WILL in some cases completely BORK users systems
is probably not one of them.

Linux, anyone?

Maybe I will, the point is that Windows 10 is UGLY,it is not polished or sophisticated,my daughters Apple software is clean and it looks GOOD.You say that Windows 10 is crowd sourced....when I had it installed (several versions),there was NO way I could get Windows feedback to work.I have used Windows from '98 onwards, that includes M.E.,2000,XP,Vista and Windows 7 and I have always looked forward to the next OS and the challenges that it would bring. But never have I seen an UGLIER OS,who chose this flat and dreary look?

No one is forcing anyone to install anything. Windows 7 is supported until 2020.

If you don't like Windows 10 don't install it. How much simpler is it than that?

Windows 8 isn't an abject failure. You should have a reason to install any OS. For Windows 8 those reasons were touch, mobility, tablets, modern apps, 2n1s etc. People are going to be running Windows 7 and Windows 8 for many many years to come.

Microsoft has considered existing Windows users careful before instituting changes. There is this thing called the Windows Insider Program which has around 5 Million users already running Windows 10 and providing feedback on what they do and don't like.

Sure Linux on the Desktop is an option for people, its great everyone has so much choice these days. Maybe setup a business to convert all those daunted users who are being held captive over to it?

1405347 2015-07-26 02:16:00 Why then wont MS allow the Start menu ( as an example) to be altered as a person wants ?

Other software manufactures make software that allows a person to change the styling to what they like. So its not like Microsoft cant do it, they simply wont.

This may sound a bit blunt, but its the truth -- Take a look at the insider Program, the number of threads and posts saying similar.

Simply put, a Desktop computer is NOT a phone and is used completely differently and always will be.

If the OS's are really customizable then the options would be there.

I'm actually totally agreeing with you when you said "if Microsoft wont make the OS like people want, then third party programs will." that is actually a very good point. Microsoft are a platform company, they make Windows. As a platform, Windows can run other software, that allows the UI to be modified etc as you point out (try modifying the UI in an iPad)

Windows has 1.6 billion users. It is hard to cater to every single persons tastes. A bit like Pizza, hard to design a single flavour that everyone likes, some hate anchovies, some hate olives etc. They chose some defaults and then others can be modified. Others can be modified by 3rd party software.

If Microsoft put every single option in then people would be complaining that they are putting those software companies out of business.

Also what you are seeing now is "just" the July 29 version of Windows 10. The Windows as a service model that means the operating system is regularly updated. That’s part of the reason Windows 10 is considered the final version of Windows as regular updates means it’s never really finished. It will never be done.

There is no reason why Themes or additional default Start Menu/Explorer settings can't be added, send the feedback in Windows Feedback and let the community vote on it

1405348 2015-07-26 02:18:00 A 'lot of' customizable options for the desktop as regards appearance and colours of windows for example were removed from Win8.1, so third party options were required if one wanted some of the appearance of Win 7 back......more or less. Presumably this was to thin things back a bit in order to accommodate tiles which not all that many (desktop) people went a bomb on.....

Windows 10 is really trying to satisfy the needs of Windows 7 desktop users as well.

Put the feedback about the appearance/colours etc into the Windows Feedback tool if you can so it can be voted on, and a bug created to be tracked on that request

Put the feedback about the appearance/colours etc into the Windows Feedback tool if you can so it can be voted on, and a bug created to be tracked on that request SERIOUSLY ?????

Obviously Microsoft are only seeing what they want to see. The Feedback doesn't work unless it suits MS's plans.

Please provide a link to WHERE the majority of feedback is saying everyone wants the tiles.

Its easy enough to post links to thousands of replies saying the exact opposite & features are being completely ignored by MS. Just look at the insider Program and many other Forum Sites, the majority of posts are complaints.

The "features" are not the problem, the real problem is appearance. Its common knowledge that you make a something pleasing to the eye, it will be better accepted.

A real classic example is at out local Countdown. They have self serve counters, ALL the products have pictures if items and their name under it, there is ONE item in the grocery options that EVERYONE has problems with (the shop assistant and I had a laugh about it) , its the Carrots -- its the only one that has a tile with the word carrot in it, no picture, I was told EVERYONE has problems seeing it.

Simple Question and please dont ignore it like so many other times.

WHY wont Microsoft give people the options to select the interface they want on a desktop? Other third party software manufactures can do it, why Wont Microsoft ???

1405350 2015-07-26 03:01:00 Just relating to the Feedback Option.

Its very badly designed. A person can post something, and the only option is to vote which increases a number.
The only visible response from Microsoft is the default wording

"We got this feedback and we're using it to improve your experience."

Nowhere can I see where it actually gets a response from Microsoft. Most of the questions/posts are months old and people have simply given up by the looks.

The insider is alive and very active - Feed back seems to be a dead horse. looking at the feedback categories the majority are voted in single digits, theres a few that may reach double, Eg 10 -20, and only seen 1 or two in triple --- Hardly High votes.

As above - love to see a screen shot of the post(s) Where the majority of feedback is saying everyone wants the tiles.

Win 10 is actually very solid. Edge seems a little unstable, but other than that I'm impressed.
