1405993 2015-08-06 05:05:00 I have found that after 2 years or so, the battery capacity reduces continuously. My Dell is 6 years old and the battery only has about 30 minutes in it. There is a red X on the power icon. Would the battery last longer if it was removed when working as a Desktop, or should it be left in?
Pros: for leaving it in-
*Protection against power cuts.
*Act as a buffer for electrical spikes
*Smooth the power supply

Is there a danger of a 'DUD' battery causing a short circuit and overloading the power supply, or a fire?

1405994 2015-08-06 06:42:00 No, modern devices with modern batteries do not need to have the battery removed if they are continually connected to AC power, their charging circuits do not overcharge the battery

the reason why you only get 30 minutes is because it is 6 years old

1405995 2015-08-06 06:48:00 Are you using a legit Dell Power adapter ?

If you are using a third party adapter the majority of them will show some sort of charging error, this is because Dell adapters have their own sensing chips in them. If the chip is not detected then as far as the laptop being charged is concerned its not plugged in. (even though it is charging /working)

Yup. That being said it usually requires a genuine or officially supported charger to be used.

This. Time to get a new battery.

As a side note it's incredible how many people at work tell me that their battery on lasts 10 mins only to find they're using a 9 year old laptop. It's amazing that any charge is being held at all.

There IS a chance of lithium laptop batts catching fire, even newish batts
Its VERY rare, but does happen

Both the Dell & Lenovo have their original power packs, so I guess that like me, they are getting old :)
