| 1405208 | 2015-07-23 12:29:00 | Crude oil prices have dropped under US$50/barrel yet the price we are paying for petrol is still very high, at >NZ$2/liter, the price was lower when crude cost >US$100/barrel. | zqwerty (97) | ||

| 1405210 | 2015-07-23 22:07:00 | There is a great difference between the price paid for oil and the taxes paid on the end product. Hint. The taxes are far far more than the amount that goes to the suppliers. Fuel taxes are the main reason for the price difference between the various countries where fuel is sold. | CliveM (6007) | ||

NZ Petrol taxfrom AA Website: When you last bought petrol, 67.129 cents per litre was collected by the government as fuel excise (excluding GST). Motorists are charged GST on the petrol excise, which amounts to a tax on a tax. The AA has called for the GST to be removed - a move that would reduce prices by 10 cents per litre and help relieve the financial burden on New Zealanders. Fuel excise The fuel excise portion includes: 59.524 cents - National Land Transport Fund 6.90 cents - ACC Motor Vehicle Account 0.66 cents - Local Authorities Fuel Tax 0.045 cents - Petroleum or Engine Fuels Monitoring Levy In addition, GST is collected on the overall price of fuel including excise. The GST on excise amounts to a 10 cents per litre "tax on taxes". AUS from Aus website. Australias fuel excise has been frozen at A38.143 cents per litre since 2001, when John Howards Coalition government ditched indexation to offset the price hike caused by the introduction of the goods and services tax (GST). So you see we pay 29cents a litre more than Aus in Excise Tax plus an additional 5% GST on the Excise Tax. Funny thing is you can still buy 91 octane in Aus for under $1.40 a litre. 6 weeks ago I purchased for $1.32 a litre in Queensland. So you see apart from the additional 29c we pay in Excise duty between NZ & Aus there is an additional 30+ cents per litre which has gone where? |

And before the last rises, the garages here - in my direct local - Massey through Glen Eden, there was a variation in pricing of 10c..... Now the variation is 2c. They all put it up and all around the same price. |
