Bring it on I say :devil :devil duly noted Terry, but I'm not so sure about that, many inmates are 'first and last time' offenders, and the inevitable outcome of institutional or official brutality in prisons is the creation of resentment and a lack of trust or respect for authority when they fail to protect the human rights of the inmates under their care and supervision. Some decades ago I went on Prison visits for social nights with inmates, and at Paremoremo we had social evenings and debates with prisoners. On one occasion I met the kind and gentlest man you could ever meet, soft spoken and respectful, everybody's favourite grandfather model. When I asked him why he was there, and for how long, and he said 'life and for murder' then moved on to other topics. One night I played card games with a hardened and repeat offender called Greg Newbold; since that day he has completed a Ph.D and is now better known as University of Canterbury criminologist and former Paremoremo inmate Dr. Greg Newbold. He recently released the first complete history of imprisonment in this nation, The Problem of Prisons: Corrections Reform in New Zealand Since 1840. Nobody could deny his experience, or his ability and intellect, and he has a significant effect on prison issues. SERCO are failing to meet their contractual obligations, and regardless of the type of offence, every inmate is entitled to reside in a safe environment during his or her confinement. Under current conditions, all we are doing is creating angry ex-prisoners with even less respect for authority than they had before sentencing. Billy |

This has been blown out of all proportion by the Labor party who absolutely hates any private enterprise doing something that GOV departments used to do. |

Dreary piffle, SERCO is interested in one thing only, money and this is the Americanisation of our land at its worst. |
