| 536330 | 2007-03-27 12:36:00 | There have been numerous posts on the Eudora User forums (and probably various others) regarding the conflict between Win 98 in particular and Eudora v . 7 . 1 (which is mandatory for Sponsored mode users after 31/3/07 to avoid being reverted to Lite mode) . A few posts have cited the link - (read the last post on the thread) as offering a fix . This purportedly thwarts the Eudora system for reverting pre-v . 7 . 1 sponsored mode users to Lite mode, but does it work now, and if so will it still work after Qualcomm pulls the plug on March 31st? I have been using the "fix" for about 5 days on a testbed installation of Eudora v . 6 . 2 . 5 (on a cptr running Win 98 SE with SESP21a) and so far have not been reverted although my regular installation of the same version on the same cptr has been reverted several times during that period (I simply reset it to Sponsored mode each time) . So the fix seems to have worked for me so far, but will the plug-pulling torpedo it or will Qualcomm torpedo it specifically? Time will tell . The instructions with the fix are not all that clear in some places - I had to twiddle it a bit to get it working . Eg if your existing Eudora icon label on the Desktop comprises more that one word (for instance, I am using 'Eudora Test') the Start command line must have "" "" around the link name (mine is -Start "Eudora Test . lnk" Having cast around widely for an alternative fix (including sending 2 unanswered bug reports to Eudora) I tried sending a message to Eudora Customer Support and was surprised to receive a prompt and helpful reply which I am quoting below - Reply from Qualcomm Customer Services "If you are running Windows 95/98/ME, please read below: We realize some users are unable or unwilling to upgrade their operating system . Please note that Microsoft no longer supports or updates Windows 95/98/ME . If you are running Windows 95/98/ME your computer is vulnerable to numerous security issues if you continue with your present operating system . You can either: 1 . Pay for a version 6 license (If you do this, 6 . 2 . 5 is the latest version you can use with Windows 98 even though the code will work with Version 7 and above); OR 2 . Revert to 5 . 2 and use the free paid mode code below for that version . To download Eudora 5 . 2, click on this link: . eudora . com/techsupport/kb/2350hq . html" target="_blank">www . eudora . com (" . google . com/group/comp . mail . eudora . ms-windows/msg/68a2466d2def956d"/URL" target="_blank">groups . google . com) Open Eudora 5 . 2, click on Help, Payment and Registration, Enter your Code and enter the following information into your Eudora . First Name: Sponsored Last Name: User Registration Code: 8183-0729-8596-3733 Click OK and you should be in Eudora 5 . 2 Paid Mode . Please note this Paid Mode code is provided to address the Eudora Sponsored Mode ad servers being shut down in the near future which will make Eudora go into Light Mode unless you upgrade to Eudora 7 . 1(Win) or Eudora 6 . 2 . 4(Mac) . No tech-support is provided with this new registration code . ATTENTION: Eudora will no longer be offered for sale in Paid Mode after April 30th 2007, after April 30th 2007 Open-Source Eudora will be available free . More information regarding Open-Source Eudora here: [url]http://www . eudora . com/faq/ PLEASE NOTE: That Eudora will fulfill all Technical Support Phone/Email obligations to our current Paid Mode customers . Gordon Customer Service Rep . , Senior QUALCOMM's Eudora Technical Services" I made a strong plea that this information be included on the Eudora home page so that it becomes readily available to those needing to download 7 . 1 but I doubt that this will happen . So this is a legitimate (if not very palatable) fix . I have not looked up what features 5 . 2 lacks that 6 . x have, but I think the Junk Box facility would be one of them . I wondered why they 'doctored' 5 . 2 and not 6 . 5, but I am guessing that 5 . 2 is the latest version that will run on Win 95 so this would be a 'one size fits all pre-Win 2000 systems' solution . HTH others in my situation . I would suggest downloading v . 5 . 2 ASAP as I have no idea for how long it (and other archived versions eg 6 . 2 . 5) will be available . In any case, Eudora may have a a limited useful life as it remains to be seen whether 5 . 2/6 . 2/7 . 1 will work with Vista and later versions of Windows . |

| 536331 | 2007-03-28 01:10:00 | Thanks for sharing this with us Robin . It would be a real shame if Eudora is incompatible with Vista, not that I plan to upgrade anytime soon . Godfather may be able to tell us of his experience with Vista and Eudora . |

| 536332 | 2007-03-28 01:59:00 | Eudora is being open sourced as Penalope wiki.mozilla.org so it if it doesn't currently work with Vista (alone with loads of other stuff) you may hve to wait until penalope is released.. |
