| 536140 | 2007-03-27 02:15:00 | Need some help on the above. Please work under assumption I know little. Just bought new comp with Vista installed attempting to transfer old stuff onto it. Old one only has floppy drive, and told cable would be too complicated for me, easier to use a flash drive. Open box they(NL) sold me. It says only for Windows 2000, XP Looked at ones available at Dick Smith for Wind98, only one I can see says for Windows 98SE. with following "The U-Storage software provided does not work correctly with Windows 98 First Edition and may corrupt data on XH8251. We recommend that you do not attempt to install U-Storage on Windows 98 First Edition, it should however work fine with Windows 98SE and greater" Anyone know what one I can buy Windows98 Any help will be appreciated. Microsoft Windows 98 160MB RAM IE 5 6.0.2800.1106 OutLook Express 6.0.2800. 1123 |

I look after a few Win98 1st Ed PCs, they have USB printers, USB cameras, USB drives. Never had a problem. Just install it. |

I believe this is quoted on the box/instructions provided by Dick Smiths, not someones theory. Im sure if this is stated by the manufacturer of the hardware it's probably correct |

Using a cable is the best idea - but needs knowledge - try some of your friends - you may be surprised what they are capable of. I remember another method that was not at all well known and that was to use the old DOS program XTREE GOLD. A cross over cable is needed but copying files is a breeze with this method. Another possiblity is actually paying a local technician to do the job. I use one myself when out of my depth and he really isn't all that expensive - has saved me hours of work and rescued my sanity. Tom |
