536095 2007-03-26 22:20:00 A family member has a couple of HP computers that we ould like to add more ram to...

Is there a program (preferably freeware if possible) which would tell us what kind of ram is in the machine and (therefore what type of ram we need to install)?

Thanks in advance.

536096 2007-03-26 22:25:00 Aida32 (www.majorgeeks.com) will do the job, as will Everest and SIW System Info from this page (www.majorgeeks.com). FoxyMX (5)

536098 2007-03-27 00:25:00 OK so using Aida32 I've found that one of the PC's is using

Module Size 128 MB (1 rows, 4 banks)
Module Type Unbuffered
Memory Type DDR SDRAM
Memory Speed PC2700 (166 MHz)

It has 256megs of ram so I'm guessing it must use 2 sticks of the above.

Is there any way tell what ram will be compatible with the motherboard?

Will DDR2 SDRAM 240pin be compatible? Or do I need to stick with older DDR SDRAM?

Thanks again for any help.

536099 2007-03-27 00:53:00 No, you won't be able to use DDR2 RAM, it won't even fit in the slot .

I'm not sure why you think the PC has 256MB as it looks like Aida32 is reporting just 128MB . You can always open up the case and have a look .

Get PC2700 DDR SDRAM . How much you can upgrade by will depend on the motherboard . Check the PC's manual or HP's website to find out the maximum MB it will accept in each slot .

536100 2007-03-27 01:12:00 PC3200/DDR400 is cheaper, and still should work. mejobloggs (264)
536101 2007-03-27 03:18:00 The Kingston site enables you to search by manufacturer and model to find suitable RAM
