535941 2007-03-28 09:40:00 I would say HDD(s) and the GFX drivers, nVidia is really not up to it with their drivers ATM The_End_Of_Reality (334)
535942 2007-03-28 11:49:00 The drivers for XP should be better than the Vista ones, though? Agent_24 (57)
535943 2007-03-28 22:19:00 The drivers for XP should be better than the Vista ones, though? Yes and no, the 8 series is still a new card and is a lot different to the other series's which means it is going to take a while to design and program the optimal drivers. The_End_Of_Reality (334)
535944 2007-03-28 23:04:00 Why do people think its the HDD's?.....If it were, the impact would effect all programs including the O/S.
The OP has to test with other games to diagnose issue with 1 game (engine) or all.

If all, then driver issue or hardware fault on new equipment (maybe heating or just bad assembly)

Yes, I agree

535946 2007-03-28 23:51:00 Yes, however, the HDD have nothing to do with FPS!, any game that thrashes the HDD is going to be slow, so textures etc are all in the RAM and GPU RAM, the HDD is normally only accessed during level upload.

As for the test, well, who can say without error details etc.

I'd be checking the temps of the card and sending back perhaps RMA

He also said "The install for XP took a strangely large amount of time." and said that rebooting windows took a long time too. This could point to a HDD problem, as I'm sure installing windows isn't going to put much stress on the video card

I guess RAM problems may also cause this as well

535948 2007-03-29 00:04:00 I noticed that all the SATAII drives I have bought from seagate have the 1.5Gb/s limit jumper on by default. Have you checked that??

Or, if you aready took it off, why not try with it on just to see what happens??

Yes I know that!! but there are possible issues with the HDD(s) obviously you are only interested in seeing that he gets the FPS issue fixed and nothing else, why not get all issues fixed in one go?

Personally I believe that the drivers are at fault or possibly the card is running hot, but cards these days will drop to a slower spec when they hit a core threshold temp (which will result in lower FPS, but the drop is not going to cause that much of a drop), on my 7800GTX that is 115°C and the core drops to 415MHz (from 430MHz stock) RAM stays the same and the GDC drops from 40MHz to 35 MHz and I have ran the card deliberately at these settings and I can tell you there is not a large decrease in FPS

It is also possible that the card is not seated properly...

No, the SATA I / SATA II jumper setting will have no real visual impact on the speed of XP installing

Dude, I do not need technical advice on thermal stepping from you, I have been building PC's since 89.I am simply stating the FPS drop is NOT HDD related! understand!

I didnt read too much into the o/s installs, he could of done a full format of the drive for all I know instead of a quick format. 320Gb x 2 full format will take a large amount of time.
