2007-03-25 09:35:00 | Nice of Nero to name rename an old accepted and well known standard and have people thinking they have discovered some new feature because its dumbed down to "wizard" status . What your making is a VCD or SVCD, no matter what Nero are trying to dress it up as . VCD stands for 'Video Compact Disc' and basically it is a CD that contains moving pictures and sound . If you're familiar with regular audio/music CDs, then you will know what a VCD looks like . A VCD has the capacity to hold up to 74/80 minutes on 650MB/700MB CDs respectively of full-motion video along with quality stereo sound . VCDs use a compression standard called MPEG to store the video and audio . A VCD can be played on almost all standalone DVD Players and of course on all computers with a DVD-ROM or CD-ROM drive with the help of a software based decoder / player . It is also possible to use menus and chapters, similiar to DVDs, on a VCD and also simple photo album/slide shows with background audio . The quality of a very good VCD is about the same as a VHS tape based movie but VCD is usually a bit more blurry . If you want better quality checkout SVCD ( . videohelp . com/svcd" target="_blank">www . videohelp . com),CVD ( . videohelp . com/svcd#cvd" target="_blank">www . videohelp . com) or DVD ( . videohelp . com/dvd" target="_blank">www . videohelp . com) . SVCD stands for "Super VideoCD" . A SVCD is very similiar to a VCD, ( . videohelp . com/vcd . htm" target="_blank">www . videohelp . com)it has the capacity to hold about 35-60 minutes on 74/80 min CDs of very good quality full-motion video along with up to 2 stereo audio tracks and also 4 selectable subtitles ( . videohelp . com/faq . htm#svcdsubs" target="_blank">www . videohelp . com) . A SVCD can be played on many standalone DVD Players and of course on all computers with a DVD-ROM or CD-ROM drive with the help of a software based decoder / player . It is also possible to use menus and chapters, similiar to DVDs, on a SVCD and also simple photo album/slide shows with background audio . The quality of a SVCD is much better than a VCD, especially much more sharpen picture than a VCD because of the higher resolution . But the quality depends how many minutes you choose to store on a CD, less minutes/CD generally means higher quality . For what its worth, DO NOT make menus, especially interactive or moving ones, They suck up so much space that it will have an adverse affect on the quality of your encoded video . And I got the info from http://www . videohelp . com One of the must visit places if your interested in Video work .

I know about VCD and SVCD I just didn't know Nero did them. Mini-DVD is what I was interested in. |

2007-03-25 10:07:00 | :D Just a bit off topic here. A workmate of mine was telling me yesterday that if you hire a dvd from the shop and copy it (NEVER of course:D ) that the shop has a machine that can tell if you copied it or not. Now i keep up with the latest gadgets and stuff as much as possible surely they dont have a machine that can tell if you copy a disc. It has got to be impossible surely. Love to hear your thoughts.

2007-03-25 10:22:00 | I think what is needed here is one of those machines that wind the DVD back to the start for other people to view. Then they can't tell if you've even watched it. | Neil McC (178) | |
2007-03-25 10:26:00 | And I got the info from http://www.videohelp.com One of the must visit places if your interested in Video work. If you go to http://www.videohelp.com you'll find that Mini DVD or cDVD is not related to VCD or SVCD format

2007-03-25 10:40:00 | hmmm . . . Even worse then I thought, Not just dumbing down an establisehed standard but creating a worse one . miniDVD, it is not a real format, but a hack instead that uses standalone DVD players' abilities to play back regular CDs . Basically miniDVD is a regular CD that has the same structure as regular DVD-Video has . Most of the standalone DVD players can be fooled to think that the disc inserted is a regular DVD-Video disc and to play it . Best sticking to VCD or SVCD . In fact . . . Biggest problem with miniDVDs is the fact that DVD movies tend to take appx . 4GBs of space and in CD you can just fit ~700MB of data -> one movie ends up taking 6 or more CDs . Therefor most of the people don't use miniDVDs, but use some other standalone DVD player-compliant formats instead, like VCDs ( . afterdawn . com/glossary/terms/vcd . cfm" target="_blank">www . afterdawn . com), SVCDs ( . afterdawn . com/glossary/terms/svcd . cfm" target="_blank">www . afterdawn . com) or their varieties . Retarded . Wait, There is more . This is no STANDARD as VCD,SVCD or DVD . miniDVD is basicly a DVD but on a CD-R(W) instead of a DVD disc . miniDVD is also sometimes called cDVD . A miniDVD does only fit about 15 minutes video on a 650 MB CD-R(W) . And . A miniDVD can be played on - Not many DVD Players
