535931 2007-03-26 06:39:00 Hi I have recently built a new pc with the following parts:

Mobo: p5n32- SLI Premium (updated to lastest bios)
VGA Card : Asus 8800GTX
Ram : G skill f2-6400l6d 4gb
CPU: intel core 2 duo e6600 2.4 mhz

I installed Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit on a SATA RAID, Windows performance was average, and CounterStrike performance was intermittent.. Peaked at 240 FPS but would usually sit between 30-70 FPS. A fresh reboot (which took ages) would usually get it back to 200FPS for the first run.

So thinking Microsoft is rubbish and 64-bit is too cool for school, I put XP Pro 32-bit on, took the RAID out and gave that a try. The install for XP took a strangely large amount of time. Anyway, still have pretty much the same problem. Windows seems to run OK most of the time, but then slows down from time to time for no reason.

Counterstrike sometimes gets 200+ FPS, and sometimes 20FPS.. Its very annoying after buying all this gear to find it runs slower than my Athlon XP 2500+ and GeForce 5700.

If anyone has any idea please help as I'm totally lost and have a very expensive paperweight on my hands :(

Cheers

Jon

Hmmmm . Hardware issue?

535933 2007-03-26 09:54:00 Sounds like a HDD issue.

You said you had a RAID setup, then installed XP on a single drive. Can you image that XP install over to the other drive and see if you get better performance?

Are all the motherboard drivers installed and up to date?

You didn't install the nVidia firewall did you?

Oh, and you didn't spend all that money to get 200fps in CS did you?

535934 2007-03-27 07:36:00 If it is 1.6 there are a lot of known problems with FPS drops but with counter-strike source it should be fine... go and check out steam forums and the people over there may be able to direct you in the right direction w000t (11562)
535935 2007-03-27 08:33:00 Could be HDD problem, strange if it does it even without RAID...

and that nVidia firewall is STUPID.

Did you reset to defaults after upgrading the BIOS, and checked everything was all set correctly??

Got enough power for that 8800GTX???

535936 2007-03-27 23:33:00 Hi thanks for your replys . At the moment I'm leaning towrads the HD's . I have 2 320gb seagate sata drives, and when I test them using the hirens boot cd I get bad results!

I think I have enough power for the 8800gtx as I went mad and bought the 1000w enermax psu . Just in case the cards to slow and I need to run SLI . LoL .

535937 2007-03-28 00:29:00 I assume you've installed drivers for all the pretty new hardware? If so what nVidia drivers are you using? Driver support for the 8800's is still pretty patchy at the moment. Pete O'Neil (6584)
535938 2007-03-28 01:05:00 Man, that spec has me green!
If there is no difference in performance between XP 32bit and Vista 64bit ( as in FPS degrade) I would go back to Vista 64, otherwise you are wasting 750Mb of RAM and limiting yourself to 2Gb per application!

Vista is still new, you may need to wait for a time until drivers etc get better.

However FPS drops such as you are describing could very well be overheating issue/power issue (unlikely with that PSU though) or basic hardware failure. It does happening on new products.

Have you tested performance with other apps/games to see if the same thing happens?. It could just be the source game?

535939 2007-03-28 02:36:00 The problem with Vista is Nvidia having problems with the drivers. So going for a new high end system? lol. Why does Counter Strike needs such a good PC? Only something like Test Drive Unlimited takes a huge amount of resources, or Flight Simulator X. PedalSlammer (8511)

Well I think the PSU is definitely good enough :D

I also have 2x 320GB Seagates, but my pc has consistent performance in gaming - what exactly do you mean by 'bad results' with Hiren's boot CD??
