| 535857 | 2007-03-26 03:20:00 | It's time for him (my friend) to renew his subscription once more. He phoned and I suggested to him to use AVG instead of Norton. Is it possible for him to keep using Internet Security's firewall but uninstall the Antivirus portion and install AVG antivirus? Can he still use the firewall portion even if the license has expired? Cheers |

You'll have to go the Symantec site, everytime u want to update it. Forget Nortons. Tell him to get Zonealarm, (altho I dont use it) Comodo, Sygate, Jetico, or a better firewall, and the free version of AVG or Avast. Either way, I think the AV and firewall part of Nortons need a current licence to update automatically. And I dont think u can have the AV by itself. Its either the firewall, (no AV), firewall and AV, or nothing. Unless its changed recently. |

| 535860 | 2007-03-26 22:19:00 | I'm trying to remember whether it is actually possible to uninstall the AV part of the suite because I know Nortons has several entries in Add/Remove Programs. Personally I can't stand Nortons firewall and agree with Speedy that the whole lot be uninstalled and alternatives used as they are much better. As a bonus the PC will be a bit quicker too. |

LiveUpdate applies to all components of NIS so even if he gets rid of the AV part his subscription will still need to be renewed if he wants to keep the firewall updated. I have nothing against the freeware AV or Firewall software (Just last night I installed AVG and Comodo Firewall for my neighbour... funny her Norton IS was kicking up a stink and she wasn't willing to pay for a crappy application) My personal preference is to pay for a good AV/Firewall Suite or good offerings of both. With sufficient research and trial use of products you should be able to find the application that is right for you. I always pimp Trend Micro's PC-Cillin Internet Security 2007, it's a great program and highly customizable and suits me fine. I"ve just installed their new Vista compatible version on Vista Ultimate and it's great. I paid like $59.95 (3 licenses) for the upgrade from the OEM version I got with my mobo and I haven't looked back since. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants a fairly "quiet" firewall and AV. All things considered it is well the money. cheers |

LiveUpdate applies to all components of NIS so even if he gets rid of the AV part his subscription will still need to be renewed if he wants to keep the firewall updated. Unlike with anti-virus there is no need to constantly update firewalls. Firewalls are usually updated when new features are introduced, some of which are not even used. A case in point is Zone Alarm's latest trick: you now have to download 39.7MB because they have included the Zone Alarm Security Suite which is not free. You have the choice as to whether you install the Security Suite (and pay for it) but you don't have the choice whether to download it or not. That stinks and must be hell for those still on dialup and it's why I still install the older versions on other PCs. :( Having said that, however, I would still recommend ZA over Nortons. |
