| 536959 | 2007-03-30 08:50:00 | I went to a mates place the other night, to fix her PC up. I used trojan remover and rogueremover, which found some adware, which wasnt too hard to get rid off / remove. Then while using IE 7 on her PC, an error came up saying something like explorer.exe buffer overflow in the title of this error. And that it had to close. I've never seen this message before. This usually happened when I went to unlock the taskbar, so u could see the icons on it (on the lefthand side down the bottom of the desktop). After this error appeared, the taskbar and icons went back to what they looked like before. (What I tried to do, didnt change anything). Also, while I was there an alert from AVG said some dll files (2 of them) were in the system restore folder/s. So, I booted into safe mode, added myself to the SR folder and there were no files in it to delete. The other thing with this PC is, its got a restore partition on D, which cant be accessed, so I could see if these dll files were here. So, how would you get into a restore partition, to see if there's a trojan in the SR folder?? I take it if SR is enabled, even if there's a restore partition, it'll also have a SR folder like any other hdd?? I dont know. I've never had a restore partition. Then she rang me last night to say, all the icons on the desktop had completely disappeared (and the start menu). Anyone come across this kind of thing before? |

The only thing that does spring to mind with a PC all of a sudden doing random things is that the HDD is about to die. Good luck and MTFBWY |

What I was asking was, can u get into a restore partition somehow, so u could check and see if there are any nasties on it. If there's a System Volume Information folder on it. Like I said I booted into safe mode then went into the SR folder on C, there was nothing there, to delete. And you cant access D to get into it to see. |

Its near brand new, but slow as. Altho a bit more ram might help. Now I know what its like to use a Celeron 3.06 GHZ CPU lol. Way slower than these 2, except these are P4's not Celerons. Which would most probably make a diff. Even in safe mode, doing a scan with AVG Free, took like and hr an a 1/4+. The hdd was only 80 or so GB. After an hr and a 1/4, I cancelled it. As I wasn't planning on waiting all night for it to finish (the scan started at 8.30 the other night, it was still going near 10)! |
