2007-03-30 03:22:00 | Hi there, I have a very strange problem on my hands at the moment. I will try explain it the best i can. I currently have an ASUS M2400 Series E laptop. A friend of mine gave it to me with this problem. It will not boot into windows xp. I know it sounds silly. Basically what it does is boots to the windows xp splash screen with the scrolling bar at the bottom, and it gets stuck there. It is not a matter of it being slow either, i waited 3 days and still nothing. It hasnt locked up either, as i can still turn on and off caps lock (a common way of seeing if the CPU has locked up) Simple you say, just reinstall XP. Yip done that, and will not reinstall xp. As in as setup reaches the point where it says "Setup is starting Windows" it just stops there as well. just like above it does not lock up. I have tried a brand new HDD and RAM still no go. Now here is the interesting bit, i can install Windows 98 fine but again cannot upgrade to XP. I cannot install 2000 or ME. Now i realise that it must be something to do with XP drivers or something so i updated bios and other firmware, still no luck. Has anyone seen this problem before? Or know if it is a common problem with this model? My friend assures me that he had not installed anything new at the time of failure. Any ideas would be great. Thanks Guys

2007-03-30 04:30:00 | Yup i have set the bios back to factory defaults with no change. Also for note i have run MEMtest86 with no errors reported and hard disk checks (fujitsu) with no errors reported.

2007-03-30 04:34:00 | Do you have another CD to use, maybe the media is buggered? | SolMiester (139) | |
2007-03-30 04:37:00 | Man, the asus support site is still down....! | SolMiester (139) | |
2007-03-30 04:53:00 | Does it boot in safe mode? Will it do a Repair Install? Asus site often does that to me but I find if you choose another country that works.

2007-03-30 05:22:00 | Yup i have tried various media sets with a combination of XP Home with and without SP2, also XP Pro SP2 and without SP2. I have also tested the media on another machine and it worked fine (original media too) I have swapped out the Cd Drive for a known working one and still no luck. It did not boot into safe mode, by memory it froze on a black screen before loading the drivers. I tried a repair install and still just gets stuck on Setup is starting windows. Thank you guys for your help by the way.

2007-03-30 06:29:00 | That is weird.... You say you can't install 2000 or ME, is that because it does the same as with the XP install, or you just don't have CDs for either OS? What about some form of Linux??
