536875 2007-03-30 00:32:00 Hi
I have been running a 2003 Enterprise home network for awhile, and i thought i would switch to a Linux Distro. Which would be the best for a home server? As i am a lunix newbie i wouldnt have a clue.

Any info would be great :-)

536876 2007-03-30 00:50:00 It depends on what you want it for.

As a newbie, something like SME Server (based on CentOS, which is based on RHEL) would probably suit you best, but if you're the kind of guy who likes to mess with the innards you'll find it frustrating, as the config is completely geared around the web interface (brilliant for newbies), but behind the scenes it's extremely nonstandard.

If you can be bothered putting in the time to learn it, I would recommend Debian Etch/Testing. It's a far better server solution, but everything will need to be specifically set up - whereas with SME you can install it and about 10 minutes later you ave a completely functional server system.

Debian Sarge/Stable is also good, but it's a bit out of date, and is about to be replaced by Etch.

536877 2007-03-30 01:12:00 im looking for DHPC,DNS,RDP (or something like that,)and file sharing services, that is on 24/7, maybe i could just use Windows XP Pro, as it is all based in one room, my bedroom, with about 3 pcs, including this machine i will use as a server aidanmaz (7180)
536878 2007-03-30 02:00:00 Have a look at this; www.howtoforge.com
it might do the job for you.
I've used it, with some of my own minor modifications, and it works for me.

536879 2007-03-30 04:21:00 SME will do all of that with no hassle and a web interface, except RDP. What do you want to use RDP for?

jcr1: Sarge is getting rather out of date - better to use Etch.

Fair enough. I suppose there's a tutorial out there somewhere that'd do the same thing:confused: .
I actually tried to upgrade to Etch a few weeks back (I think it was you, Bletch who suggested it). Broke the whole damn install. Had to re-install Sarge again, which is working pretty good, for me, again..... But No GUI this time; it's just a server, pure & simple and with PuTTY, Filezilla & SFTP Drive I have oodles of connectivity. I'll experiment with Linux GUI's as a virtual machine - thats where I'll look into Etch:thumbs:
Must do some research on it:nerd:

536881 2007-03-30 22:29:00 I reckon you can't go past Fedora. I have found it works pretty well out of the box (what box, you downloaded it) and it has lots of users (both as a desktop and a server).

I'm sure Jen will agree with me too
