536765 2007-03-29 08:58:00 hi I have an Agere modem in an HP a1060a and starting yesterday it decided to notdisconnect when asked/told via the connection icon down the bottom right of the screen. Additionally the connection icon has stopped displaying/lighting up the active connection and says it has sent and received 0 packets.

I'm running up to date Norton AV.

Help.

Thanks.

PS. I get a message when trying to disconnect which says: Error Disconnecting. It is not possible to disconnect at this time. The connection is currently busy with a connect or disconnect operation.

DO a spyware scan too.

536767 2007-03-29 15:41:00 I had this modem-won't-disconnect when the modem and the sound card were both using the same IRQ....

Now...and I got nasty arguments about the possibility of this happening... when I played with the IRQs and got rid of Norton's, the problem went away...

Seems that sound cards is not normally toggled off until the computer is shut down (end-run routine) and this is normal..... but then this bogus IRQ command is keeping the modem running under the same rule..and this might be setting up a precise interrupt.

I personally believe that Nortons sets up a small interrupt storm during shut down whereby everything loses it's priority...especially the modem and soundcard. I haven't proved this...but I have seen it enough times to be very suspect that this is the true case.

Some people never have this problem...but it IS out there for others.

I also believe Norton and modems and sound cards dislike each other...I, on the other hand dislike Norton/Symantec/McAfee too.
