537371 2007-04-01 04:07:00 Hi

I want to download a few shows off the TVNZ ondemand site (eg tvnzondemand.co.nz ) but the little screen just says "loading" forever and the "download" button never appears.
The odd thing is that some shows work fine - ie in the "What's Hot" tab, The Hothouse or Rude Awakenings work fine - the screen says "click to play"and if I do that, it plays. I can download it etc.
The shows I want to download just won't let me. Just realised that all the free shows don't work while the non-free shows (with playpoints required) do work... Thanks TVNZ! Lots of free content, I just can't download it!

I emailed TVNZ about it but had no solution (he asked me about my system etc) Tried IE7 (I use Firefox 2.0.0.3 normally) and it didn't work either.

Has anyone had luck downloading, for example, The Zoo (which my kids are crazy about)?

Any suggestions?

Thank you
Benjamin

537372 2007-04-01 04:26:00 Have you got flash installed? & what sort of internet connection do you have? (as the Zoo video plays fine for me) stu161204 (123)
537373 2007-04-01 05:09:00 Hi Stu

well it's nice to know it works for someone.

Yes I have Flash installed. Wasn't sure which version & didn't know where to find it so I just downloaded the latest version (9.something), installed it & still no joy.

Have a 256K broadband connection which has always worked at that speed whenever I've tested it.

537374 2007-04-01 05:24:00 Tried the site in Firefox - no go .

Tried IE7 - same .

Now this is the weird bit, tried in Firefox using IE mode and it works! :stare:

Hope it works for you bkf11 .

Cheers Lucy

537376 2007-04-01 05:55:00 Can you actually download the shows, to watch later or do you have to watch them all online?

The Zoo ones seem to work fine for me by the way (only watched the first few minutes)

537377 2007-04-01 07:05:00 Hi

I tried Lucy's trick.
Checked flash player here:
www.macromedia.com
which told me I still had V7 installed. So I installed V9.

I'm not sure what Lucy meant by "IE mode" but I found an addon that makes things look like in IE here:
addons.mozilla.org
Downloaded it, & added it to my toolbar.

Anyway, got same results as Lucy - IE & Firefox both didn't work. Firefox in IE mode did work but only in playing back in the browser - no downloading. The other problem was that it was really choppy playback - like maybe 10 frames per second or less. Unwatchable. Very frustrating!!! Also since our connection is 256K, it won't stream & play in real time. Not very practical, I just wanna download them!

My computer is an AMD Duron 1300, 512Mb RAM, Geforce 4MX440 graphics card. It can play video no problems.

Any more suggestions?

Thanks so far!
Benjamin

537378 2007-04-01 07:10:00 You will need to be able to access ad.doubleclick.net which is an ad server, you might have ad blocking software which blocks this website, or you might have added it to your hosts file.

You will need a stable connection at 768kbps to stream smoothly.

The Zoo ones seem to work fine for me by the way (only watched the first few minutes)It is possible to download the video files. They are in Flash Video (.flv) format.

The video file URL can be found as it is a parameter in the player URL.

Just search for .flv in the source code of the correct page.

537380 2007-04-01 08:44:00 Well here's a direct link to the first four episodes . It's a little tricky for the uninitiated to find the direct download*, but I'd recommend downloading rather than trying to stream the whole thing (each is roughly 130MB) . This way you can watch it at your own leisure too .

Use the links below in your favorite download manager or right-click and "Save target as . . . " . They'd usually be forced to download if pasted into the browser address bar but it doesn't seem to work that way with these for me, probably incomplete headers so they end up downloading as text .

. tvnzondemand . co . nz/download/store1/flash/2007/shows/thezoo_series8_ep1_tm811282 . flv" target="_blank">download . tvnzondemand . co . nz
. tvnzondemand . co . nz/download/store1/flash/2007/shows/thezoo_series8_ep2_tm813190 . flv" target="_blank">download . tvnzondemand . co . nz
. tvnzondemand . co . nz/download/store1/flash/2007/shows/thezoo_series8_ep3_tm813333 . flv" target="_blank">download . tvnzondemand . co . nz
. tvnzondemand . co . nz/download/store1/flash/2007/shows/thezoo_series8_ep4_tm814288 . flv" target="_blank">download . tvnzondemand . co . nz

But to answer your initial question - yes, I can see them fine (Fx2 . 0 . 0 . 3/Mac OS X) .

I'm not sure what kind of file rotation/renaming system they have in place so these may well be broken paths by now, we'll find out I spose . The last section of the URL is obviously a random token to foil automated download of whole seasons .

* I just use firebug (http://getfirebug . com/) in firefox and watch the httprequest headers for a familiar request string, you can use this method to dump locally pretty much any 'streaming' media like video and music, etc .
