| 537348 | 2007-03-31 22:59:00 | I well know that the speed of ADSL varies with the time of day, usage etc, however very recently I noticed a very clear increase in download speeds. A podcast that I regularly download on iTunes which usually took 30 mins approx just took about 3 mins. A huge change. :) :) Have run a test on www.nzdsl.co.nz and the result was download speed of 2.543 kbps (317.9 KB/sec transfer rate) whereas before it was typically approx 1.100 kbps. Did another test on the consumer website (which seems to use the same meter) and got 3.109 kbps. The only change recently - I am on the Xtra Explorer plan - is that I have now got a D-link wireless router, which incorporates a modem. Previously I had a Asus wired modem (come router). We did have a representative from Telecom, a young man recently arrived form Mainland China going door to door, who was telling me that in April Telecom are going to make an announcement re faster speeds. However, despite being a very pleasant chap, he knew very little about broadband and what he was telling us. At least he went away from me better informed than when he arrived (though my knowledge is vey limited too !). Should I attribute the increased speed to the change to a wireless router ? Or is it that Telecom have made a change already ? Despite the very much faster download speed for podcasts etc, I notice that PressF1 pages take longer to load !! Misty  |

What does upgrading local exchange mean - do not know what is involved ? Or would they have put in more cabinets around the area ? From what the young chap was able to tell me the former sounds more like what he was trying to get across :stare: Misty |

| 537353 | 2007-04-02 01:14:00 | Telecom were upgrading all the exchanges getting it ready for ADSL2+, by the end of the year they are spose to have around 50% done and then they will do other places in demand. | trinsic (6945) | ||

No challenging you -- but this sounds rather straightforward. Virtually all of the commentaries and critics etc I have read (a helluva lot !) seem to make it very difficult and costly to upgrade speed. Some are extremes of course - such as fibre-optics throughout the country. Misty :2cents: |
