537243 2007-03-31 03:42:00 I have some 11 year old disks. Contents were saved using MS Backup. Does anyone remember which Microsoft OS was around then and when MS Backup disappeared? Or if there is a program around now that will open them?

Contents aren't critical - it's actually some games that might not be relevant now. But before I throw them out I thought I'd check.

537244 2007-03-31 03:51:00 MS backup software is still available in WinXP Pro but not in Home Edition. And I'm not sure if they have it on Vista, and XP Media Center Edition. And what OS are you using? PedalSlammer (8511)
537245 2007-03-31 04:11:00 I'm using Win XP Pro. Went to Help and it said it has been replaced by NT Backup.

But there are a couple of computers running Windows 98. And a spare or two floating round that I could install anything from Dos 3.1 to Windows 95 on... but maybe not for just a few old games.

537247 2007-03-31 05:17:00 MS backup software is still available in WinXP Pro but not in Home Edition. That's amazing. I was just telling my missus that it's time she backed up her data on her XP Home machine, not realising at all that it didn't have Backup!

Can you recommend a 3rd party app?

537248 2007-03-31 05:46:00 If you have access to the XP Home disc you can install NT Backup.

From memory there should be a Valueadd (something with value in it) folder on the disc and there should be a folder called NTBackup which has the install file in it.

I used MS Backup with Win95 and I think it was available on Win98 but the former wasn't compatible with the latter. Very inconvenient so I never used MS Backup again after that.

NT Backup should still open those MS Backup files fine.

If you use Windows XP Professional, the Windows Backup utility (Ntbackup.exe) should be ready for use.
If you use Windows XP Home Edition, you'll need to follow these steps to install the utility:
Insert your Windows XP CD into the drive and, if necessary, double-click the CD icon in My Computer.
On the Welcome to Microsoft Windows XP screen, click Perform Additional Tasks.
Click Browse this CD.
In Windows Explorer, double-click the ValueAdd folder, then Msft, and then Ntbackup.
Double-click Ntbackup.msi to install the Backup utility.

Weird, as MS Backup files work fine in both 95 & 98 for us I think( I cant call us having any issues with it)
