| 537208 | 2007-03-31 02:27:00 | Hi, Is it possible/is there a program that compacts files to the start of a hard drive? Disk Defragmenter kind of does this but not that well (after a zillion defrags). I need to do this so I can resize the partition to pt Linux on a new one. Thanks, Tim |

| 537209 | 2007-03-31 02:42:00 | Did you mean compressing the HDD in Windows? I'm sure you can by going to disk properties to compress it. A defrag means resorting the files on the HDD for a faster performance, becauese each time you open a work file, and then save it, it automatically moved to annother location creating 2 pieces of information so a defrag is compiling the file back into 1. I'm not very sure how to explain it, but defrag cannot help you save HDD space. Linux? Why not try to install it on another HDD, because if you have tons of files in Window havn't being backup is a real pain. So just unplug the current HDD and plug in into another HDD. Take your risk if you want to install Linux on the HDD with Windows OS. |

| 537211 | 2007-03-31 03:17:00 | You mean some reserved space? I mean when installing Windows XP it must reserved around 8MB for HDD. To repartition the HDD for Linux in WinXp, is to get partition magic or other software, so far Partition Magic works best for me. Good luck partitioning your HDD now. |

| 537212 | 2007-03-31 05:22:00 | It is a major job to move the data you have showing up on yr Xp defrag and not worth the effort.If you want a good free partitioner get Gparted which is a free download to put on a CD.Most linux OS's come with Gparted built in and do it all when you install the OS. Do not worry about installing a linux OS with Windows allready in place.It can be a problem tho if you try to install Windows after Linux is installed. |
