537124 2007-03-30 21:40:00 Hi Guys

I seem to be getting quite a bit of crackling on my telephone line.

This seems to be stopping me from accessing my broadband sometimes.

If I can't log on, then sometimes I pick the phone up and hear a bit of crackling and noise and if I dial a number and they pick up, then quite often my broadband starts.

My ISP thinks I may have a noisy line or filter etc.

How would you fix this ?

Buy a new filter ?
Buy a new router ?
Buy a new switch ?
Install a new cable ?
Call Telecom ?
Buy some sort of testing machine ?
Get a private technician round ?

537125 2007-03-30 22:00:00 To check if it is something connected to your phone line causing the problem do an isolation test by disconnecting all phones, filters, faxes, double adapters and any phone line to your sky digital. If your broadband then works normally connect them back one at a time to isolate the faulty unit.

Your broadband connection does not have to be filtered so you can connect the router direct into the phone jack when doing the isolation test as filters can go faulty and need to be isolated.

Also bypass any extension leads as they are a common cause of problems.

537126 2007-03-31 02:40:00 Well worth that exhaustive check on all phones and connections in the house - considering the $$$ someone else would charge for a call-out. If that doesn't prove anything - consider - have you got underground cable, from road to house or from ground up the pole outside? If it happened after recent rain then there's possibility of problems there. Not that you can fix it yourself, but if you find one of those grey pipe things exposed or cracked or run into by neighbour's 4WD then you have reason to call Telecom for a check. coldot (6847)
537127 2007-03-31 05:22:00 I seem to have the complete opposite problem. There is a constant crackling on my phone, yet every time someone picks up/hangs up the phone I get disconnected. --Wolf-- (128)

537130 2007-03-31 11:04:00 A few years back we had intermittent noise on the telephone line. It always happened a day or so after rain and lasted for 24 to 48 hours. By the time Telecom came out the problem had gone. Went on for months.

Finally a technician diagnosed the problem. Rain took a few days days to seep down through the soil to a faulty cable. By the time the technician arrived it had dried out.

Fault eventually found in winter when it didn't stop raining - and was still faulting when the technician arrived.
