537381 2007-04-01 08:53:00 About playback of flv files. FLV is pretty much THE standard in streaming video nowadays with it being the format of choice for all major video sites online. You can play them back on your computer in standalone players like Riva FLV Player (rivavx.de) or VLC Player (www.videolan.org/) or on any other media player on your computer after installing ffdshow (http:).

I recommend the ffdshow option as this enables your favorite media player to playback almost any video format you'd come across*. I'd also recommend avoiding "all-in-one codec packs" like the plague.

*Thats if it doesn't already :S

537382 2007-04-02 02:00:00 I'm an overseas Kiwi and am really frustrated that tvnz is not allowing people outside NZ to join ondemand and download shows. You'd think we'd be it's biggest market. Surely there's a relatively easy way to fool them into thinking I'm accessing from a NZ computer? It's not like I want to steal the content - I'm willing and ready to pay (in NZ$ even). Would really love to catch up on some good Kiwi TV. Any suggestions? gregru (12072)

Are overseas visitors blocked from watching the video there? That's just stupid. I suppose you could try using a local proxy (view cached at Google (www.google.co.nz)) but that might be more trouble than it's worth and I don't really know what I'm talking about.

537384 2007-04-02 06:45:00 I might start a site up sharing all the downloads link without the drm on. Just an idea. msnforum (11610)
537385 2007-04-05 20:37:00 I came across a freeware desktop media player last week called Democracy (www.getdemocracy.com/) which is quite web-centric because it can process, organise and download all sorts of online video using RSS feeds. It's similar to Joost (http:)* and is the big thing at the moment, taking online video to the next level.

The good thing with this player is that you can grab the RSS feeds from tvnzondemand.co.nz (http://tvnzondemand.co.nz) and drop them into Democracy, taking the video out of the browser and putting it in a handy 'video' folder on your computer to watch at your leisure. This could possibly help ex-pats watch a bit of kiwi telly if they're getting blocked from tvnzondemand.

Highly recommended if you've got bandwidth to burn, that counts out 99% of NZ :\

*Joost being the closed beta "tv-over-ip" company which uses desktop software utilizing the bittorrent protocol to move tv between subscribers, from the creators of Kazaa and Skype

537386 2008-05-08 06:00:00 I have written a quick guide on my blog which explains how you can download TV shows from the TVNZ ondemand website (in it's current setup).

it's actually quite easy. Pity they arn't in High Definition at the moment.

537387 2008-05-08 08:00:00 I've realised after reviewing this thread why TVNZ ondemand wasn't working in Firefox for ages - Adblock Plus wasn't letting the initial ad through. sal (67)
