2007-04-04 09:00:00 | I was cruising through another computer help group and read some comments about dumping prefetch. One posting said that you can speed up yer comp 95% by dumping prefetch. Is that the same as temporary internet files? | Lovelee (6586) | |
2007-04-04 09:50:00 | Not quite the same. Prefetch is XPs way of being helpful by remembering what apps you used last time, and it 'preloads' that app on bootup the next time. Some people say dumping prefetch will improve performance, but others say it will slow things down quite a bit. Read more on it before you do anything is my advise

In real world terms it ain't gonna benefit you or make you younger or your children any prettier. If you've got performance worries then there're a bunch of other things you could look into to help. |

2007-04-04 10:36:00 | Lovelee, ccleaner does this, download it here and get the slim version not the other ones: CCleaner v1.38.485 - Slim: www.ccleaner.com You can run it as is with no changes to the options, it will clean heaps of crap off your computer and get rid of old prefetch files. When it asks you elect to save a copy of the registry backup files. HTH. The slim version has no Yahoo toolbar and only english options it is the one I use. Choose the offer to add it to the recycle bin right click option as you install it. You will be very glad to have this program if you don't already have it.

2007-04-04 11:23:00 | The slim version has no Yahoo toolbar... If I remember correctly you can do a custom install on the standard version which gives you the option of not installing the toolbar and possibly language support. I agree with what you say though. There's no point installing programs (or parts of programs) you don't need or want.
