PC is 4 months old - Dell Pentium 4, 1 gig ram. Not sure if it has an ethernet card or if the one ethernet connection on the back is directly onto the m/board.

Brother has been on B/band for around 8 weeks with Telecom. Previously on dial up. Over last 5 weeks+ noticed a huge dropoff in speed and given he was on the go large plan he decided to cancel.

He swapped to ihug and over the last few nights has had almost zero connectivity. At this point ihug have been next to useless.

It was taking his pc several minutes to even talk with the modem on 10.1.1.1.
The modem is a dlink 502T

Brought his modem and cables over to my house.. Everything worked sweet once I had connected it all. Even worked through changing a cable one at a time, changing the filter etc, wiggling all connections. I reckon his modem and cabling is 100%.

Took it back to his house, plugged it up and switched on. Did the 10.1.1.1 to change the modem settings back to his ihug accoutn and it took about 3 minutes for the modem settings page to appear...It was painfully slow..

After about 15 minutes of playing with macfee settings & firewall and not noticing any difference in download speeds I tried to access the modem again. It was instantaneous - the way it should be..

Download speeds should be unlimited but are around 700kbps..I get around 6500 to give you a comparison with the same modem.

Given it might have been me playing with macfee or alternatively the pc warming up in the 15 minutes it was on, where is your money in terms of the problem. I had mine on a hardware fault.

Thanks for any learned inputs

538079 2007-04-03 23:58:00 Short update...

Turned on the PC this morning..Once again even accessing the modem on 10.1.1.1 took about 3 minutes to get to the login:password screen and another 4 minutes for the modem settings page to appear..

Can someone else help confirm (or not) that this indicates the problem isn't ihug or his phone line ( at this stage ) but is a problem between the PC and the modem - either hardware in the PC or software conflicts?

Thanks

538080 2007-04-04 00:20:00 If you are having problems talking to the modem then it is not an ihug problem.

The problem sounds like it could be McAfee or some form of spyware.

Have you tried it with McAfee turned off or disabled?

Get this (www.trendsecure.com) and post the log here.

538082 2007-04-04 04:27:00 McAfee web shield is the culprit, I ended up removing it from a Vista PC and all good.

If you still want to use McSuckafee, just disable the Web Shield module, dont ask me how though as I wont use that software.
