2007-04-08 00:51:00 | Hi I have a bit of a problem. I am using XP Home SP2 on a Dell 4550 (P4 2.53). For the last few days whenever I shutdown I get a blue screen message with the stop error IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and STOP: 0x0000000A, (0x000000B0, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x8052D4DA) This doesn't mean much to me but as far as I can find online, there seems to be some sort of driver problem involved. I haven't made any hardware/driver changes but possibly it has been caused by the last XP automatic update (KB925902) At this stage I have not been able to identify what driver may be causing the issue (and everything was working fine a week ago) so what I want to do is go back to a system restore point before the update was installed. Unfortunately System Restore won't work properly because the computer won't shut down properly. Catch 22. I have tried doing it from safe mode as well with the same problem. Anyone have any ideas? Am I at least looking in the right direction?

2007-04-08 01:09:00 | Solution to your problem here: support.microsoft.com This article describes how to use a sample debugging session to determine the specific driver that is causing the following error message: Stop Error IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (0xA)

2007-04-08 10:05:00 | Thanks for your advice. I have identified a possible culprit driver (sonypvl3.sys) according to WinDbg but cannot see why this should suddenly not work. It has been fine for over a year. What should I do now? Still wondering if there is a way I can get system restore to work properly too.

2007-04-08 17:29:00 | The Google on this gives me an answer about a time stamp: Unable to verify timestamp for sonypvl3.sys This has been noted on several forums as a Vista problem..are you also running Vista or some sort of Vista evaluation copy? There is an ongoing debate about nVidia and Vista compatibilities too. If you have a nVidia display adapter, there have been driver issues. This is not, however, unheard of in XP versions too. Is your system clock fairly accurate?..that said..check this link out too. (http://www.registry-cleaner.net/) Registry cleaners are kinda nasty or can even be dangerous...so watch your step here. After you run one (and the Windows Live One Care has one too), you should contact Sony for a newer versions of the driver. On the other hand: I prefer to NOT use system restore at all. It is just a haven and safe harbor for malware and spies and trojans and such where they can re-infect you over and over. In my case, I have now 4-500 gig hdds and 4 250 gig hdds + 1-40 gig hdd for my root area. Running system restore on all of them would be just immense and nasty to control. Much preferred is to get recent and up to date drivers for all your hardware and programs and such and commit them to a cd where they can be called upon to repair and restore your system to the way you liked it originally. Back up everything that you cherish on cd's the same way and just forget about system restore. You'll save a significant amount of hard drive space this way too, and keep the RAM a lot less busy shuffling files into and out of the restore partition. I learned the (very) hard way about backing things up outside the tower (or computer) by losing over 40 full length videos and over 4000 MP3s...and that's not gonna happen again.

2007-05-05 01:08:00 | Mattv, Your last reply was a GODSEND!! I have been spinning my wheels trying to fix this %#$ issue for weeks. I followed the link you provided and ended up removing the faulty sony handicam usb driver. The symptoms were identical.. It worked flawlessly and then all of a sudden a got the blue screen when shutting down. After running the kernel dump through WinDbg I got the same driver identified as the culprit (which I Googled to come across your posting). What a needle in a haystack! How many people out there have a Sony DVD handicam with the software installed to Windows XP SP2 and are savvy (read nerdy) enough to use WinDbg successfully to narrow it down to the correct driver.. I tried the system restore trick, going back to Feb 20th (in safe mode) and it actually worked despite the blue screen on restart, but the stop error returned eventually once hotfixes, etc. were installed again. Even when I removed ALL of them one by one, the error remained. I can't explain that one mate, since Sony isn't detailing which hotfix is interacting badly with their driver. I signed up here just to say thanks sooooo much!! You've got my gratitute up here in Canada. Hoodwink37
