538591 2007-04-06 10:06:00 In the next couple of months I plan to move from the Windows platform to an Apple Duo Core Mac's, probably the 20" version.

Does anybody know if the video card is upgradable after purchase? It has an ATI X1600 in it but I am not sure this will cut the mustard when running games via bootcamp and thus windows. I would be keen on placing my existing video card in there if possible.

I guess the other thing about the x1600 video card is would it be any good with games (generally speaking)?

Another point is conencting it to telecoms xtra broadband. The current Dyna Link 502 modem provided by them does not have a set uip CD like it does for windows. How would one go about connecting to the telecom network?

The final question relates to transfering photos and music, how would one go about doing this? I could transfer it onto a USB backup drive but could a MAC read this as the files sytem would be NFTC?

Thanks for any pointers

538592 2007-04-06 10:28:00 No idea about the video card but after you try can you report back your findings/game performance?

The setup CD from Telecom is a scam, There is no need for it on the PC platform unless you had it plugged into the USB port, and you shouldn't have been using USB, thats like boiling water in your toaster.

Format your USB drive in old fashioned FAT, Both platforms can read and write to it no issue.

Yes as far as I know video card is upgradeable after purchase.
You would be fine for general gaming.

With regards to moving your photos and music from PC to Mac, you can use a USB drive and just copy your files over. Files between PC and Mac are no problem at all. iTunes will convert .wma files into aac or mp3 on the fly. You can also install a copy of Parallels and run Windows XP or Vista natively on your Intel iMac if you want to. Running Parallels means you don't have to reboot your Mac when moving between Windows and OS X.

The iMac range is also due for a design update around June which will mean that existing Intel iMacs will get a bit of a price reduction a bit nearer the time which could be worth looking out for.
Cheers.

538594 2007-04-06 11:09:00 I read this article a little while back. You might find some user related pointers in it that cover the differences between the two systems.

The video cards on the 17 and 20 inch imacs are soldered to the mother board. Only the 24 inch imac video card can be upgraded after purchase
Once again WINMACGUY please check your facts before posting. you give fellow mac users a bad rep and I dont like it.

What type of video processor is provided by the iMac "Core Duo" and "Core 2 Duo"? Is it upgradable?

The discontinued education-only iMac "Core Duo" 1.83 17-Inch (IG) and current iMac "Core 2 Duo" 1.83 17-Inch have "integrated graphics", specifically an "Intel GMA950 graphics processor with 64 MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory."

The discontinued iMac "Core Duo" 1.83 17-Inch and iMac "Core Duo" 2.0 20-Inch, and current iMac "Core 2 Duo" 2.0 GHz 17-Inch and iMac "Core 2 Duo" 2.16 20-Inch each have a PCI-Express ATI Radeon X1600 graphics accelerator with 128 MB of GDDR3 memory. The iMac "Core Duo" 2.0 20-Inch and iMac "Core 2 Duo" 2.16 20-Inch could be upgraded with 256 MB at the time of purchase.

The current iMac "Core 2 Duo" 2.16 24-Inch model has a NVIDIA GeForce 7300GT with 128 MB of GDDR3 memory. It can be upgraded to a NVIDIA GeForce 7600GT with 256 MB of GDDR3 memory at the time of purchase.

Based on photographs from those whom have disassembled the iMac "Core Duo" and "Core 2 Duo" models, the video is soldered to the motherboard and cannot be upgraded, with the exception of the 24-inch system. Although Apple makes no mention of it in technical documents, a number of third-parties have reported that the video uses a MXM module, so upgrading the video theoretically is possible, although to date (see top), MXM modules for purchase by individuals are few and far between. The quote is from everymac.com published October 2006, so not completely up to date.

My advice is to look into this properly before making the decision, which means from an apple dealer.

P.S please disregard any comments from winmacguy.

538596 2007-04-06 19:45:00 If your Dynalink modem is already configured all you need to do is setup the Mac for Ethernet as per this link. You don't need a CD as Metla has said.

If it was a PC I'd say no, its too lame now.

538598 2007-04-06 23:02:00 Another point is conencting it to telecoms xtra broadband . The current Dyna Link 502 modem provided by them does not have a set uip CD like it does for windows . How would one go about connecting to the telecom network?Just plug the ethernet cable into your Mac and in the network preferences select share internet from ethernet .

plod is correct . You can't upgrade a video card in an iMac (other than a few limited options at the time of purchase), or any other Mac, the exception being the MacPro . My sister's MacBook Pro has an X1600 and it seems to do a decent job with games the few times I have used it . However, the iMac is long overdue for an update, so if you are worried about it I would wait until the next update . The Mac Rumors Buyers Guide (http://buyersguide . macrumors . com/) is helpful when deciding the best time to buy a new Mac .
