539749 2007-04-10 06:55:00 Hi group
6 months ago I set up a home network all with XP, 2 pcs and an old laptop.
It has dlink dsl-g604t modem I got 2nd hand from TM directly cable connected to pc in lounge. (Master computer I suppose) bought from DSE a network card with aerial sticking out of it for computer in kidlets bedroom, laptop got card thing fitted into slot.
Put 3 cds for modem, network aerial card and laptop thing in the applicable computers and everthing worked straight out of the box for the first time in my life.
You think everything would be rosey but its not
From my single piss drinking days in the Navy I have a small 3 bedroom spec house rectangular shaped about as small as it could possibly be. The bedroom pc gets garbage reception i think it says ultra low and keeps dropping out. I was worried oringinally my neigbours might tea leaf my broadband but it hardly makes it one end of a small house
I want to connect a cable directly from the modem in lounge under the floor to the bedroom pc.
Can I buy cable and crimpers and hook it up or can various cable lengths be bought.
Bought ones would be a pain in the ass because i would have to drill a large hole in the floor for the plug.
Do I just buy another directly connected pc networking card and remove wireless one?
Also 6 months of trying and I havent managed to share printer probaly spent a hundred hours trying to get it to share printer.
Any advice would be gratefully recieved

539750 2007-04-10 07:38:00 So you just want the 2 PCs connected?
I'd buy a switch, give them each a cable to the switch. And there can be another to your broadband modem too if you want them all to have internet.

You can just run the cables under the floor and up through a hole, or buy wallplates and do it properly. Yes you an buy a network punch tool or that from DSE.

539755 2007-04-10 08:46:00 The "switch" is a box with a number of sockets for Ethernet cables.. and a bit of logic inside it It's a clever "hub", which allows a number of computers to be connected together.

I would be inclined to buy a long Ethernet cable. If you haven't done it before, making your own cable is likely to be an expensive way to get a cable which doesn't work. ;) The tools aren't cheap, and you must use the correct type of connector for the cable you are using. You'll only need about a 5/8" or 3/4" hole to clear the connector.

Again you could get one of Trademe for less. The 604t is a 4 port switch also isn't it. If you can get access under the house, or in the roof, you could run cables which you can by in 5, 10, 20 and 30M lengths. You can make them yourself but they are probably cheaper to buy 2 or 3 cables (avoid DSE as their cables are at the more expensive range).

I like your comment about your neighbour stealing your broadband. Wireless can be unreliable at the best of times :horrified , so can you see your neighbour connecting with the signal strength at 20% (yes it is possible, but walk in front of it and it will drop out). Actually, knowing your luck, your neighbour will get a better signal than you do from your own wireless router :D

539758 2007-04-10 09:09:00 Forget the switch - your modem already has a switch (a "10/100 ethernet switch" is probably what pctek was talking about) built-in, so your original idea is fine. The crimp tools for directly adding RJ45 plugs to the end of your cable are pretty expensive - you may be better off getting some wall jacks (there are tool-less versions around) & buying some cheap CAT5 patch cables to go from the wall to the PC (or router at the other end). That will look much neater, too (mind you, jacks are a lot more expensive than RJ45 crimp plugs...)

Bear in mind that there can be hot & cold spots in your WiFi coverage in the house, depending on reflections, etc, so not having good reception in one room doesn't necessarily mean your neighbours can't piggyback on your connection. Use MAC filtering and/or encryption (WPA if possible, WEP otherwise) to stop this (but get it all working unencrypted first).
