539458 2007-04-09 21:24:00 OK, this one is for those who have upgraded from Windows XP to Vista:

What is so good about Vista? Exactly why do you like it better than WinXP? What features in Vista are an improvement on WinXP?

Conversely, for those who installed Vista and went back to Windows XP for reasons other than hardware or software incompatibility, what were your reasons for doing so?

Oh, and please remember to list the version of Vista that you are running.

539460 2007-04-09 22:27:00 Tried the 32 & 64-bit version of Vista.

Hardware support for my Ti4200 was non-existant, same goes for my SB!Live 5.1 Channel soundcard. Why should I upgrade these? They perfectly fine for watching DVDs as well as all games that I want to play!

Gaming performance drops in Vista, even if you have the official nVidia drivers

The OS itself sucks up a ton more resources, with a fresh boot up using around 650MB Ram compared to XP's 220ish.

Sure, the new black theme looks nice and sleek for those who are bored with the fisher-price theme, but thats not hard to get for XP.
The Sidebar can be kinda cool. Most i know turn it off. Its nothing new, linux / macs have had desktop widgets for donkeys years, and its not hard to get similar things for XP.

If you're looking to upgrade, I would be inclined to ask "Why are YOU wanting the upgrade?"
Maybe its because you want to play Crysis (And seriously, check out some of the large High-Def in-game reviews... who wouldnt!), or maybe because you're required to do Desktop Support for Vista for your business?

Its certainly not going to be because its faster than XP, or because its more secure:

Look a little deeper and about 4-5 clicks from that site and you can have yourself full-working exploit source code.

Personally for me... Going back to XP on the laptop & OpenSuSE on the desktop :)

Have a look for previous threads, Im sure they cant have all disappeared over the easter break while I was away.
Heck, Ive even done a blow-by-blow commentary on their "The wow starts now" mailer that was posted out to some people stating why you should upgrade to Vista.

539461 2007-04-09 22:57:00 IMHO, there is nothing in Vista that couldn't have been added to XP in a service pack or 2, but of course there is more $$$$s to be made in selling a "new" OS. :2cents: snoopy (74)
539462 2007-04-09 23:52:00 To be honest - other than my past bad experience with VIsta's poor handling of new drivers for my sound and video card, I would say Vista is much better than XP.

Now that my drivers are all set, Vista (Ultimate 32-bit) is much more stable and easier to use than XP was. Gaming I actually find a bit better. In XP, I get about 42 FPS in Black and White 2. In Vista, I get 46 FPS with the same configuration.

539463 2007-04-10 03:39:00 Because I was able to tell my "better half" that we needed a new computer to run the new OS...... and she believed me. Now I have a beast. theflyingsurfer (12111)

Oh yes. Yes, yes.

However, it does run under DX9 you know.

I'm currently playing with a customers build, it has a yummy 8800GTS in it, 3DMark06 was very impressive. Oh, how I want to keep it.:)

539465 2007-04-10 04:43:00 Hi theflyingsurfer,

Welcome to PressF1

Lucky you, if I told my girlfriend / parents / family that, they would laugh at me and tell me to find the money myself.

Yes, you are right, of course, that the Vista thing has been done to death here but I was sort of looking at it from another angle . Or at least I thought I was .

It's just that I had a play with Vista in DSE the other day and came away musing to myself that if I was to buy a new laptop, whether I would pick one with Vista or WinXP on it, assuming that it was plenty grunty enough to run the former .

Sadly, the one and only reason I could come up with to want Vista is to familiarise myself with it but I was kind of hoping someone would give me other reasons, apart from games, which I don't do .

Maybe I ought to get Jen to delete this thread, it was a bad idea . :(

539467 2007-04-10 05:44:00 Just upgraded to a couple of new PC's for the office(s).

Both have Vista Premium, all is smooth, performance is fine. I tend to like it better than XP, once I got used to UAC, which probably does provide better security...

Nothing special re hardware, both are identical with AMD 3800+ dual core, GF 7500LE (for dual screens) and 2 GB RAM.

Office 2007 is a far greater learning experience than Vista. It it easy enough to navigate around Vista, not really much of a challenge.
