539428 2007-04-09 14:53:00 A friend bought an HP pc running Vista off DSE. It only had 512mb of ram and the poor thing was struggling to run, the hard drive light was about permanentely on and the machine was thrashing. I put another 512mb in it for her and it runs better now but nothing startling considering it now has over a gig of ram. My first comp was a Pentium 200 with 128mb of ram running Win 98 and that was waaaaaaay faster. After using her machine I will never buy Vista! And DSE shouldn't sell such a configiration really....it'squite unprofessional to sell a machine that needs upgrading before you can use it properly kiwidoug (12110)
539429 2007-04-09 15:00:00 have you tried modifyin the virtual memory settings........also being a lappy it's very likely got the cpu throttled down when it's on low demand.....you can usually change this in the bios..... drcspy (146)
539430 2007-04-09 15:00:00 and if it's got norton on it that'll also slow things down even if you had ten gigs of ram lol it's terrible......... drcspy (146)
539431 2007-04-09 15:08:00 Are you blaming the seller of the PC or Vista or both?

I run windows Vista home basic with no problems. There are plenty of forums out there where you can gets tip on how to free up resources and memory on Vista.

Blaming the operating system for not running on a system that is underpowered is not fair. Blame the people who sold you the system in the first place.

If you want all the bells and whistles, 3D graphics, and gimmicks you have to invest decent money in a system.

I bought the cheapest PC I could find after my laptop broke. I am more than happy with it.

539432 2007-04-09 18:42:00 Beware of HP computers being mass advertised and being sold by every second shop in town.
They are overpriced, underpowered, insufficient memory. And the number one sin. "Comes with VISTA". It may have Vista installed but you don't get the disk . Half their puny hard drive is partitioned and carries a back up- of the OS.
A young chap I know recently bought one of these from Hardley Normal's. Spent his life's savings on it.
He was almost in tears when he told me about it.
First thing I did was to delete the HD partition and formated the HD.
We then took the thing back to the shop and demanded ,Money Back. Got it too.
He now has a comp with a slightly better cpu , 4 times the memory, double the HD size, and Vista PLUS the disk. Built by a professional. And $189.
And he's smiling again.

You're right. Don't blame the OS makers. Use an operating system with sensible requirements instead.

539434 2007-04-09 20:37:00 Vista has a high hardware requirement, there is no doubt about it, another thing is all the big branded PCs (HP, Dell etc) have shedloads of software that they install and is absolute crap which slows everything down, that is another factor...

drcspy - I don't see where the OP says anything about a lappie... :p

After building a PC I am NEVER going to buy a branded PC EVER AGAIN! the best thing to do (in my mind) if getting a new PC is to get one custom built by a PC shop (or self if you are up to it :p), and it will likely be more powerful and less expensive

That's nothing new, they have done that for virtually every version of Windows that came out. Windows 98 ran like a dog with just 32MB RAM, WinXP with 128MB the same.

What do you expect going to a chainstore? They aren't technicians, they're just sales boys.
Blame the likes of HP, Compaq etc, large US corporations who are i the business of selling labels.
All their "pcs" have the minimum they can get away with and usually cheap nasty components too.
Go to a real PC shop - you'd get a choice of O/S too.

539437 2007-04-09 23:06:00 BUYER BEWARE

Why should buying a PC being any different from buying a stereo, TV , car or whatever, you have to do your research (including price) before you buy anything nowadays or you will end up with an overpriced under performing lemon...... :2cents:
