539145 2007-04-09 02:37:00 Is out. Check it out at www.mepis.org and get it from the Mepis Mirrors (www.mepis.org), the torrents may be a bit light at the mo. Murray P (44)

Yeah but, Mepis is prettier though, if you can run Beryl.

539149 2007-04-09 04:38:00 BTW, I plagiarised that from a Vista vs Mac OS fanboy poofight. Murray P (44)

Beryl

"Compiz is the original compositing window manager from Novell's XGL project". There's the N word.

539152 2007-04-10 09:11:00 Why the confusion DD? It's a combined project, improved upon and called Beryl. It works well, is easy to configure out of the box (if you have the right hardware [but, not to be confused with the massively wasteful Vista prerequisites]).

Not that an OS should be rated by how pretty you can make it, heaven forbid that things should descend to such trivial matters, but there's no denying it's rather nice.

Configuration is also easy for you lappy and WiFi users. Again, mostly straight out of the box, with the (wireless) WAP driver wrapper already loaded.

539153 2007-04-10 09:39:00 You given 6.5 a whirl yet Murray? What about Beryl?

I tried setting up compiz on FC6 but couldn't get it to launch. Tried some troubleshooting on it, but then sort of lost interest. :p

Been running 6 . 5 for about 4 days now Jen .

Unfortunately, with this machine, although it has enough RAM (512MB), it's reliant on onboard GeForce2/nForce 64MB graphics (2001 vintage Asus m/b, 1800+ CPU), which I haven't managed to get the full 3D effects out of . There are plenty of configuration options though, I just haven't explored them, or the various drivers yet (but suspect I'm * out of luck); Berly Manager, Berly Settings Manager, Berly Settings Manager (simple), Emerald Theme Manager and then your various driver options (new machine in the pipline for May/June, so watch out for pleas for advice from moi . I might throw the kitchen sink at it this time) .

Apparently it's better to set monitor resolutions, if you have one of the newer/rarer LCDs/Wide Screens with odd(ish) native resolution, from the live CD then when you install Mepis it will pick the resolution up from that without the need for manual tweaks .

BTW, the install took all of 10 minutes, if that, on this machine . I reused the existing Mepis partitions and X'ed yes to preserve the Home data . Each time I install, it's easier . There's even a simple network app for those that have trouble with that side of things, though I didn't need to use it, everything was detected and running on first boot to the new desktop .

Linux for lazy people is here  :o
