539719 2007-04-12 08:16:00 Do the LEDs on the keyboard flash in turn soon after powerup? Graham L (2)
539720 2007-04-12 10:41:00 does that mean that I should go purchase a new power supply and video card?

My suggestion is forget spending money on a power supply or a video card, just get a new computer :badpc:

Yes, the 3 leds of the keyboard do flash when I first switch the computer on.

539722 2007-04-12 11:17:00 has anyone suggested checking the motherboard and the powersupply for bad capacitors ? These are the little round cylindrical things that populate both the board and the internals of the powersupply........take a look at em if there are any that are bulging on top or the sides they're stuffed......these being stuffed can cause your system to stop booting entirely......and possibly cause the symptom you have also described drcspy (146)
539723 2007-04-12 11:37:00 If lights and fans are going, means at least part of the several output voltages from the power supply unit (PSU) are working, try another PSU as your first effort, either new (brand-new cheap 400watt ones are about $70-80 from here for instance)

or used (as long as its 300watts or more).

Excellent idea also, good thinking Batman:D

539724 2007-04-13 00:29:00 Like others are hinting at some electronic components could be beginning to fail, if so it's only going to get worse. Trying another power supply is a good suggestion.

After the PSU though get back to basics - unplug EVERYTHING from the motherboard except the power eg all drives, add in cards etc so all you have left is a motherboard with CPU / RAM on it ( you can leave front panel buttons connected though ), then turn it on, if the beep still takes ages to happen then the problem is in MB / CPU / RAM - you can try taking some RAM out but bear in mind some older boards required pairs of RAM chips to work.

If the problem no longer occurs then start plugging things back in - one at a time - to see whats the culprit.

Have a look at your motherboard - if the BIOS battery is a rechargeable one as used on some models ( usually soldered on ), it may have died and be preventing boot up until a suitable amout of charge builds up, disconnecting it would prove this and won't cause any real harm - just means the BIOS will reset every time you turn off. You could probably get a replacement from Jaycar.

Just my 2 cents worth.
If you're not very tecnical or don't have much exp handling electronics then you should get help.
In any case make sure you earth yourself regularly

Not usually no.

But that depends if any tuners have a VGA connection on them.

539726 2007-04-13 07:26:00 Do you get a flash from the leds on disk drives (in turn, again) very soon after power up? Can you open and close a CD tray by using the push button? If the answers are yes to both , the PSU is probably OK. Can you toggle the Num Lock LED on/off with the Num Lock key? If so, the CPU is working. ;)

It's looking like a video problem, but ...

Make quite sure that all memory sticks are properly seated.

539727 2007-04-13 11:48:00 I've plugged each of the branches from the power supply into the hard drive in turn and you can hear the hard drive spinning with each one . When one of the branches is plugged into the cd drive, you can see the LEDs on the CD drive flashing and the tray can be opened and closed .

When IDE 1 is plugged into the hard drive, it can be heard spinning . However when IDE 2 is plugged into the hard drive, I cannot hear it spin .

The NUM lock key LED cannot be toggled on/off .

I stripped the motherboard of pretty much everything I could unplug except for the LEDS connected to the motherboard . I have 2 pieces of ram which I inserted each in turn into 2 of the 3 slots (for some reason I can't seem to insert either ram into the 3rd slot) individually and switched on the computer . I could not hear any immediate beeps from the motherboard .

Can it be a video problem if even after 40 minutes the graphics appears on screen?

About the capacitors, I can't seem to find any that are broken . What did you mean by them stuffed and bulging on top?

539728 2007-04-15 07:18:00 I bought a new power supply yesterday but that still didn't fix the problem. So I guess there wasn't any problem with the power supply.

Also, what components does the motherboard require to be connected before the beep can be heard? Does it include the hard drive as well as the ram?
