539438 2007-04-09 23:07:00 Windows 98 ran like a dog with just 32MB RAM, WinXP with 128MB the same. I had a PC that had 128MB of RAM and Win 98, I installed XP on it and it wasn't actually THAT bad... of course it doesn't compare in ANY way to my current machine :D

Go to a real PC shop - you'd get a choice of O/S too. Agreed

539439 2007-04-09 23:50:00 A friend bought an HP pc running Vista off DSE. It only had 512mb of ram and the poor thing was struggling to run, the hard drive light was about permanentely on and the machine was thrashing. I put another 512mb in it for her and it runs better now but nothing startling considering it now has over a gig of ram. My first comp was a Pentium 200 with 128mb of ram running Win 98 and that was waaaaaaay faster. After using her machine I will never buy Vista! And DSE shouldn't sell such a configiration really....it'squite unprofessional to sell a machine that needs upgrading before you can use it properly
Don't blame Vista. It's the PC manufacturers' fault that they're only customizing the computers/notebooks for maximum profits only.

And as far as I'm concerned, I'm not angry or anywhere upset just because Vista has quite a high requirement for an OS. We are advancing, and advancing must eat lots of resources.

Do you call Vista an advance? Go and wash your mouth out.:angry

1. Why must it eat lots of resources to advance?
(Does not sound very advanced does it,ha-ha). :D

2. What are we advancing to with Vista and all its bad stuff, maybe an "Orwellian" future!!

539442 2007-04-10 03:20:00 I don't know why many people are MS bashers, but I for one actually like MS. Other than annoyances that I find, I still like MS nonetheless.

I like Vista much better than XP. One is because it is more stable, and two it is much prettier. Sure, it takes quite the machine to run it properly, but I think it's worth it.

Depends on wether you want an OS or a picture gallery.

I prefer XP.

539444 2007-04-10 05:20:00 Vista has a high hardware requirement, there is no doubt about it, another thing is all the big branded PCs (HP, Dell etc) have shedloads of software that they install and is absolute crap which slows everything down, that is another factor...

drcspy - I don't see where the OP says anything about a lappie... :p

After building a PC I am NEVER going to buy a branded PC EVER AGAIN! the best thing to do (in my mind) if getting a new PC is to get one custom built by a PC shop (or self if you are up to it :p), and it will likely be more powerful and less expensive

How many desktop pc's have you seen in DSE?

I had just popped by the Botany branch DSE - a few. :p

Most computers (both laptop and desktop) that are sold in DSE have at least 512MB of RAM if Windows Vista is installed on them.

Cheers :)

539446 2007-04-10 05:58:00 BUYER BEWARE

Why should buying a PC being any different from buying a stereo, TV , car or whatever, you have to do your research (including price) before you buy anything nowadays or you will end up with an overpriced under performing lemon...... :2cents:

Woa, we have a law for lemons. It's called the Consumer Guarantees Act.

The goods do what they were made to do and fit for the purposes that the goods are normally used for.

see www.dataprojector.co.nz
for a summary.
