539841 2007-04-10 23:19:00 Hi All,

I am looking for a forum or membership management system written in php is something similar, has anyone got any recommendation here?

Also, I have been reading a little bit about Ruby On Rails and am a bit intrigued by it. Is there any recommendation on similar packages of the above using RoR?

Cheers

539842 2007-04-10 23:49:00 I am not sure what I am talking here, but most php-based forums use phpBB? For example, www.studyit.org.nz

Cheers :)

539843 2007-04-11 01:49:00 For local testing with RoR on Windows, I recommend wiki.rubyonrails.org You'll need to go out of nz (http://dreamhost.com/) for proper RoR hosting though I think (or dannz might be able to cut you a deal on his account ;P).

PHP boards I can recommend are punBB (www.punbb.org/) or Vanilla (http:), they're both simple but well featured. Apparently the most secure of the free lot is SMF (http://www.simplemachines.org/). Can't remember where I heard that but worth a look.

539844 2007-04-13 09:26:00 Thanks JamesKan, I will have a look at that link when I get a chance .

Sal, the wiki link looks good, just run from a folder without installing anything sounds fastastic! I must have a look and see if there is any virtual appliances for RoR . I've downloaded a virtual appliance for MySQL, it works well and quite small .

So you reckon no one host RoR in NZ?

I don't know much about RoR yet, but from the info I have skimmed so far, it sounds very promising? Would you recommend it over php? I only have very limited knowledge of php, the only real experience was modifying some codes in osCommerce for an eCommerce site . Never wrote anything from scratch .

539845 2007-04-13 11:42:00 PHP is a simple preprocessor language for HTML. A whole lot has been added onto it over the years to allow it to do other things. Rails is a web framework built on a general programming language (Ruby). Each approaches web development from a completely different angle and as a result they are each best suited to different kinds of tasks.

The best place to start with Rails is to look up the links to some good tutorials through the Rails wiki (http://wiki.rubyonrails.com). It will take some getting used to if you're used to PHP as the paradigms are completely different. I personally enjoy the clean syntax and flexibility of Ruby and don't see PHP as even an option for personal projects any longer but your mileage may vary.

ruby on rails is BLEEDING edge to a large extent, but is the way of the future.
