540009 2007-04-11 03:01:00 I am out of town right now . . . (on a FIC mobo AMD/Duron w/XP-Pro-SP2 and everything required) for a friend with a USB 2 problem . It only had USB 1 . 1 or so originally and the AIO HP rats out on it and moans that it COULD run faster on a USB2 . 0 . . . that's where and what we decided to fix .

We went to the local Staples, and got a USB2 expansion card, plugged it into the mobo, and booted . . YIPPEE! it was recognized .

OK . . then I put the Belkin F5U 021 4-port hub into one of the rear ports of the new card . . it too was recognized (another YIPPEE!) . . and Windows says it has no driver . . . so I went to Belkin w/s and they say it's a PnP unit with no need for a driver . . . so OK I thought . . . YIPPEE!

I have a few accessories on the USB Hub, and again it has this error bubble saying that everything would be a lot happier if it was in a USB2 port .

I thought that's what I had done!

I tried removing the card and rebooting . . . same thing .

I tried the internal USB port on the card . . . all three of them report the same stupid thing!!!!!

I tried removing the power on the USB hub and it says it doesn't have sufficient power to run everything and needed the power supply re-installed, which I did . So I know XP can see the silly thing anyway!

I went into the BIOS and made sure the PnP settings were on AUTO . . . .

I PnP'd and un-PnP'd to death everything I could find and let it reboot 1,000 times . . . . I changed slots, moved cards around and everything works except this damned USB2 card! Don't get excited . . . read the next paragraph first . . . . >>

I get the dumb bubble that says to click here to find a solution to the problem . . . and it points to the same damned card that's in the expansion slot . . . . . and get this . . . . . XP SAYS the card is USB2 enabled . . . so now what???????

I am becoming angrier . . . . :badpc: :badpc: :badpc: :badpc:

I run this same USB Hub by Belkin on my SOYO and DELL machines and they can run at USB2 speed very well . . . so what's the story?

540010 2007-04-11 03:11:00 Does this machine have at least XP SP1 installed?
SP2 would be better.
If not you will need to install USB2 drivers for the USB2 card.

540011 2007-04-11 03:21:00 Yup...got it to SP-2

Hmmmmm..USB2 Drivers? is that something I forgot?

There was no disc in the box...it said PnP on it...Hmmmmm?
SurferJoe46 (51)
540012 2007-04-11 03:44:00 After SP2 was installed, did someone delete everything under the USB controller entry in device manager?

If not, delete them, then reboot.

Then, see what happens.

540013 2007-04-11 04:09:00 Is the Mobo USB 1.1 or USB 2 compliant? Earlier Mobo's were only USB1.1. dotbond (7154)

Its in the 1st post USB 1.1. Thats why he had to buy a USB 2 PCI card.

540015 2007-04-11 04:20:00 Sir Speedy:

I did it all just so...and Windows found everything all over again...and it looked good..UNTIL...

I got that damned bubble telling me that everything would run better on USB2.0....

UGHHHHHH!!!! :badpc: :badpc: :badpc: :badpc:

The nonsense of it is that everything is going thru the expansion card...it just ain't working in 2.0...BUT

XP sees the card as enhanced...so I gotta believe it's capable of running at 2.0...right?
SurferJoe46 (51)
540016 2007-04-11 04:33:00 Umm yup usually if it says enhanced it is USB 2.

Is it saying everything would run better on USB2.0 if whatever you have is plugged into the hub? Or when its plugged directly into the USB port??

Umm is the hub USB 2 as well?

Because, if you're plugging a USB 2 device into a USB 1.1 hub, even tho it's plugged into a USB 2 port, it would still run @ 1.1 speed.

540017 2007-04-11 15:28:00 Umm yup usually if it says enhanced it is USB 2 .

Umm is the hub USB 2 as well?

Because, if you're plugging a USB 2 device into a USB 1 . 1 hub, even tho it's plugged into a USB 2 port, it would still run @ 1 . 1 speed .

Got the same hub system here at home, where I am now . . . and it runs at 2 . 0 . . . so I will try to direct connect a few things to the 2 . 0 card later when I get back over there .

I see . . . after a night's sleep, that that may be the case and it's the hub that's messing up . . . .

Belkin INSISTS that there's no driver for the hub . . . so I have to believe that . . . but mine works, the other one doesn't .

Probably it's defaulting to a slower speed thru a defective hub . . . .

thanks

UPDATE:

I just called the place where the "problem computer" is, and had the printer USB plugged into the card directly and it got the same bubble . . "This device would be happier . . . etc . . . etc" . . . so I guess it's back to square one again . . . maybe a defective card?

Looks like I'll go back to Staples and get another card to try .
