541356 2007-04-15 23:57:00 I have a new SONY VIAO laptop running Vista and an 18 month old HP Presario running XP home. They are in different rooms and hard wired to the same ADSL modem though a 5 port hub. Both can see the internet and work fine. I would like them to see each other and be able to share drives and printers. I have run the network Wizard on the XP machine and told the VISTA machine it is on a local network (or at least I think I have). I have shared drives and printers and set up the same workgroup name on both machines, but they do not seem to be able to see each other – when I go to my network places they are not there. I have rebooted both.

Is this a VISTA to XP problem? Or perhaps a firewall issue – both machine have Norton. Any help greatly appreciated.

Thnaks

541358 2007-04-16 00:10:00 Rule 1:

Dont use the Network Wizard in XP, it doesnt work.

If u want to share a folder create a folder and share it.

Same goes for a printer go to the printer properties and click on the sharing tab.

Select share the printer.

Then on whatever PC go to add printer and search for the printer on the PC thats got the printer. Or type in the address for the printer: ie: \\username\nameofprinter (name of printer, that appears where u selected share this printer).

And if u use firewalls, (apart from XP's), u have to configure it, to allow the other PC's to access it.

And if u want the networked PC to get on the net, put its ip in manually (under the network / LAN connection).

Mostly i think ur external firewal is palyn up. what firewal u got?. try to ping from each computer, then u might kno which computer is causing the problem.

Nothing wrong with using DHCP. I find it far easier, at least you know if your PC isn't getting an IP then something is wrong with the router and not the PC.

Thats if u use a router and you're on broadband. I should have mentioned if you're on dialup.

I would say it is a firewall issue too, try turning both of them off and try it then, if you see each other, then it is a firewall issue... if not re-enable the firewalls and look elsewhere...

541365 2007-04-16 01:41:00 Or just go to the network wizard in the firewall's config, you have to add the mask/network of each, so they see each other.

Or get another firewall.
