I have a XP Pro PC . It has SP2 and is fully updated . There was a problem with the computer and I have fixed all issues but one . The Welcome screen no longer displays any of the users .

However, I can log onto the PC by hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL and logging in with any of the users on the PC . After logging in, there are no users listed in the Local Users and Groups MMC, but the users ARE still listed as members of the various groups .

However, I can login with each of user . The list of users are displayed when I enter NET USER from a command prompt .

The most annoying thing is, this has happened before, and I managed to fix it, but can't remember how . I have read through scores of websites looking for the answer, but most don't even seem to understand the problem . . . .

Have always had problems solved when I've asked here, so please don't let me down . . . . .

Thanks

540938 2007-04-14 07:23:00 Thanks Radium, but....

That's one of the sites I've already been through - the problem I have is not described.

The closest is;

An existing user account may not appear in the User Accounts tool in Control Panel, or on the Welcome screen. You may also receive the following error message when you attempt to create a new account:

The account already exists

This behavior occurs because you have disabled the account. Disabled user accounts do not appear in the User Accounts tool, or on the Welcome logon screen. You can only access these accounts in the Local Users and Groups snap-in.

But, in my case, I can't see the accounts in Local Users and Groups snap-in, re-enabling the account is not applicable.....

540939 2007-04-14 22:02:00 as a admin user try this
go to
control panel -> users -> Change the way users log in or off. Ensure that "use welcome screen" is selected.

But....

Through several hours (ignoring family, and living on coffee...) I tracked the problem to a corrupt registry file ( C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SAM ).

Backed up all Documents and settings files/folders then deleted these folders, replaced the corrupt file from the repair folder ( C:\WINDOWS\Repair ) using recovery console.

Logging on as Admin, I then re-created the users, then restored the backup of the files and folders from the 'Documents and Settings'.

Had to fiddle around with security permissions on the folders etc, but now seem to be fully functioning again.

Now my only problem is coming down off the caffeine and trying to remember names of family.....

Cheers
