2007-04-18 05:41:00 | You would be awkward, Bevan. ;) Most queries about modem sound have been from people who want to turn the sound off. :badpc: Speedy's cleanup might help the OS functioning, but I doubt very much that it will make you hear the dulcet tones of the modem. Sweep's suggestion looks more likely.

2007-04-18 23:39:00 | Maybe the peizo speaker on the modem has died, I've had that happen to me. I love it when someone comes along and suggests the improbable. Technology abounds with inexplicable problems which frequently confound the experts. But when a user of said problem actually confronts it, it's sometimes a pretty simple resolution. Anyway, to reiterate... now that the auto-connect issue is resolved, why bother with trying to fix the modem noise.

2007-04-20 08:12:00 | Thanks Sweep. I tried that and it didn't work so I think I will have to get used to having no sound. OK. You may have a generic driver installed or your current driver may be corrupt. Try uninstalling the modem and reinstall using the drivers that came with the modem. Agere used to be Lucent I think. If you download Everest Home Edtion it will probably tell you which revision you have. Post back with any further INFO or PM me. I don't give up easily and would like to fix your problem. HTH

2007-04-22 05:30:00 | [QUOTE=Sweep;543801]OK. You may have a generic driver installed or your current driver may be corrupt. Try uninstalling the modem and reinstall using the drivers that came with the modem. I bought this computer early 2003 and it had a Lucent Win Modem and in September 2004 the driver was updated through Windows Update to an Agere version which worked fine up until a couple of weeks ago. I can not reinstall the modem as I didn't get a driver disk when purchased. It irritates me when something stops working for no aparent reason but I am getting used to having no sound from the modem so I think I will leave it at that. Thanks to all who have made suggestions, it has been an enjoyable learning experience.:)

2007-04-22 05:37:00 | Thats your prob. Never get drivers from the Windowsupdate site. Whether its a videocard driver, modem driver, printer driver ... Download it from whoever made it / the manufacturer. Getting drivers from the WU site, will always screw it up.
