| 541497 | 2007-04-16 08:51:00 | Does anyone know how I can get sound from my modem? I have Windows XP SP2 with an Agere Win modem on COM3. When I dial out with the modem there is no sound, although the modem does work and connects to the server. The sound works for other apps and Windows itself, so I know the speakers work. In the Control Panel Phone and Modem Options, the modem speaker volume is set to High. In the Modem Properties, it says the device is working properly. At the same time programs such as Internet Explorer and Outlook Express stopped automatically connecting and I have to log on to the internet before starting them. This problem started about a week ago and I have no idea why. I can not pin it down to anything that I did.. Any suggestions? Thanks! Bevan |

| 541499 | 2007-04-16 09:03:00 | I take it, youre on dialup? If u r, double click on the dialup icon then properties / general. Click on configure, then enable modem speaker. A modem has its own speaker, it doesnt use normal speakers. |

| 541501 | 2007-04-16 09:36:00 | This problem started about a week ago and I have no idea whyPersonally I'd be happy with that - modem screeching is a pain, and having IE and OE auto connect can be a minor security risk. I have to wonder though if you haven't got a bug in your system... it's a bit of a far guess, but something evil has installed itself on your computer, which has disabled the sound to make you unaware that it's trying to connect you. This can be caused by malicious dialers, which can end up costing you a fortune in overseas toll calls. My guess as to why it's stopped the auto connect of your IE and OU is that it's simply reversed the setting taht you had. So... highly recommend that you give your system a good anti-virus scan and using HijackThis, link available from Speedy's signature, install and run it, and copy and post the resulting log back here. My theory about a malicious dialer, unlikely as it sounds, is not uncommon. |

| 541504 | 2007-04-17 06:53:00 | Hi I used Hijack This and deleted the items as instructed and now OE and IE log on to the internet as they always used to but the modem still makes no sound. The batch file you mentioned: @echo off cls del /s /q "c:\Documents and Settings\Warren\Local Settings\Temp\*.*" is to keep the directory free of clutter. I found that it had 600 redundant filesin it so I thought I would give it a bit of a spring clean. Thanks for your help. |
