542133 2007-04-18 23:38:00 I just bought an ASUS DRW-1612BL thinking I had 3 IDE cables which means one spare - 2 are used for hard drives. I know I have 2 SATA cables. The ASUS drive is E-IDE but I have no E-IDE cables left :horrified Can I add more IDE cables to my computer? Is that possible or will I have to let go one of my hard drives?
Thanks.

542134 2007-04-18 23:54:00 You will need to get a cable with a double connection so you can plug 2 devices into the one cable.
Make sure you also set the master/slave jumers appropiratly also.

542136 2007-04-19 00:02:00 Thats the right cable.

Just dont put the burner on the same IDE connection as a hard drive.

It can affect its performance.

Anyway just to clarify some points:
IDE controllers can have 2 drives on each,1 master & 1 slave
( or both on cable select (CS), not used by most people )
Most boards have 2 controllers = 4 drives total ( + any SATA ones )

As previously stated it's best to avoid HDD and optical drives on the same cable, but it will usually work if you need to - it will probably slow down the HDD and I definately wouldn't try and burn from one drive to another on the same cable, but other than that it does work.

An alternative is to add an extra pci IDE controller card to allow extra drives to be connected, I bought a cheap one for about $40 that had 2 SATA + 1 IDE connectors

542138 2007-04-19 02:35:00 Oh sorry. When I said cables I meant 2 plugs, so one controller. And one SATA cable with 2 plugs. I just bought that IDE cable with 2 connections on it so all should be well when that comes. What does the slot look like that I plug this into on my mobo? Fishy (10540)
542139 2007-04-19 02:50:00 It will be a direct replacement to one of the IDE cables you have in there now. DeSade (984)
